BANGKOK: -- The Education Ministry will start accepting applications for its Professional Teachers Project next week. Successful applicants are guaranteed teaching jobs in the government sector upon graduation with a good grade.

"We will offer as many as 1,566 teaching positions for this project in fiscal year 2013," Sriyada Palimaphan said yesterday in her capacity as chairwoman of the panel tasked with selecting institutes and students for this project. She has also served as the secretary to Education Minister Suchart Tadathamrongvej.

"We have already concluded the selection criteria," Sriyada said after emerging from a meeting yesterday.

She said eligible applicants must be fourth-year students in the five-year teacher-training programme and enrolled in a major sought by a relevant agency. "They must have a pleasant personality and moral soundness befitting a teacher."

Sriyada said of the 1,566 vacancies, 1,472 would come from the Office of the Basic Education Commission while 94 others would come from the Office of the Vocational Education Commission.

"At the time of graduation, the participants must have a cumulative grade point average and grade point average in their major of no less than 3.00 to qualify for the jobs offered via this project," she said. Sriyada said the application period would start next Monday, June 18, and run for about two weeks.

So, they're offering jobs to students who are already almost finished with studying at Teacher's Universities.... Aren't these students already going to become teachers??? It seems to me that this whole project is a waste of time & resources.

Wouldn't they be better off trying to recruit Science or Mathematics majors to become teachers?
