we will be moving from BKK to CM soon and i am trying to find out what's the best and cheapest way to ship our stuff.

we will be flying over there. my question is: are there option to ship by train, by bus or should it be a shipping company?

i'm in no hurry and it could take a few days or a couple of weeks.

thanks for any kind of information.

Is it a whole house full of furniture and appliances or just a few tea chests?

Cheapest per kg rates are via the train, but the storage fee can add up if you don't pick it up within a few days. Of course you need to get it to the station, usually a songtaew driver + an assistant will do it for not too much, figure B100 per hour each on average plus what you'd spend on a taxi for the truck, just negotiate with the guys hanging around at the end of the routes.

If not that much stuff, the airport unaccompanied luggage service isn't expensive, you'll need to make sure it's tidily boxed or bagged, they've got the big poly tarp/bags there but much cheaper to buy at the market.

If it's tons you could just hire a guy with a truck, or of course there are (IMO crazy expensive) actual moving companies.

So, if i understand correctly, i should go to the train station and find out about rates.

I assume i'll have about 20-30 big cardbourd boxes. maybe train would be cheaper.

is the post office a cheap alternative?

I've seen lots of motorcycles mailed via Thai Post at my local post office. Even a refrigerator once.

You might just give them a check after you get the weight and cube.

Mac

Sorry, didn't see it before. i'll definitly check with the post office.

With all of those option there is still to find a tuk tuk, or similar to move all of it to post office/train station. that might cost 1000 TB.

and still pick up in CM and get to location would be around the same.

I dug up my notes from when I researched this a few months ago, save you the trip.

Train

BKK -> CM ß4.5/kg, overnight

2 days free storage, then ß20-30 per box per day depending on size

Big strong poly bags at the station ß65, cheaper at Bo Beh market

Try to get there well before 6pm if you have a lot

Swampy airport:

Unaccompanied luggage ß32/kg, includes door-to-door pickup/delivery

Thai Airways cargo - ß18/kg

Don't know about the post office.

Intra-city moving:

Don't think that many boxes will fit in a tuk-tuk, like I said go to where the song thaew guys hang out go to the end of the queue and start asking who wants to help. I usually pay a bit over what the taxi would cost + shoot for B100 per hour for the guys helping - the driver usually doesn't do much, but he's often the owner of the vehicle, pays for fuel etc.
