My self and my wife, who is Thai, are going to take our pickup to Laos for a few days later this year. It is an organised trip so hopefully I have been given the correct information.

Apparently I just need to get a 'car passport' and a visa for myself? I read somewhere that if you are over 65 years old the visa is free ... correct.

Thanks guys any information greatfully received . By the way the car is not financed.

Yes you must get a car passport and depending where you cross the border the rules may be different. To be sure of no problems take all the info on the car to prove ownership etc as in Mukdahan they dont just accept the car passport the first time you take the car out of Thailand, they check everything before they enter the car on the computer, after the first trip you then only need the car passport. Don't forget to take out insurance at the Lao side of the border and place the sticker on the windscreen to avoid being stopped by Lao police. I've never heard of any free visa for over 65 yo, but i will be going over in the next week and i will check on this at the Lao Visa office on the bridge at Savannakhett. I hope you are right as i'm 65 in a few months but i really doubt it. Drive carefully.

Get visa on entry for you, $35. Not need go Lao embassy. Insurance on entry too. smile.png

Thanks .. but have already been to the embassy ... 1400Baht ... pick it up tomorrow pm. As I'm going with others, all Thais I think, I didn't want to delay them at the border

Looks like we both still need to get an International Driving Licence as neither of us have the 'all asia' one, just the basic Thai one

The all asia one is just a 5 year Thai licence

Technically a 1 year is a probationary licence

Weii I have a standard 5-year licence and my wife has a lifetime one ... my understanding is that neither is any good for Laos ... guess I'd better check again

I don't suppose that you would like to summerise ... better still ... do we need an International Driving licence or not ... thanks

I allready did when I wrote that a 5 year licence is valid on its own.

We are all sorted now thanks ... my wife changed her lifetime paper licence for a new one ... managed to keep her old paper licence 'for memory' ... so she is now OK I updated mine for 150Baht as I had renewed my passport since getting my licence, but as Harry said it was valid for Laos.

Actually in the Driving Licence place there is a list of countries where a Thai Licence can be used.

Just have to sort out the car insurance now ... my Thai insurers want 1100Baht to insure me for the five days with the same cover that I have now. I understand that you can get insurance at the border for I think 600Baht but don't know what cover they give ... seems sensible to use my own insurers.

Now looking forward to the Isuzu Caravan Train trip to Laos in August.

JAS21, its sounds very interesting, can you tell how it was organised? Something you saw on the internet or just some locals that have decided to go on a trip together, well now I saw you write Isuzu caravan trip, so perhaps Isuzu have arranged this trip?

Can you tell us which thai insurer you use. Not all of them do and the information of which ones do may be useful.

Yes, organised by Isuzu. Information is published in one of the Thai newspapers around March time I think ... sorry no idea which. Think preference is given to those that have just bought new. It's an all D-Max trip ... I have the V-Cross 4*4 A/T I just love it and before I had, from new, a 2007 BMW 520d. In future I'll stick to trucks .. what a view and plenty of room for suitcases, golf clubs and fold up bikes in the boot.

That is cool, I hope I can go on one of those one day.

I am also finished with sedans, just ordered a Ford Ranger.

Don't worry about your Lao visa, it can easily be obtained on arrival and is valid for 30 days. ASEAN, Swiss, Luxembourg and Russian citizens don't require a visa to enter Laos.

Take care when driving your RHD Thai car on the right-hand side of the road in Laos...I drove a LHD Lao vehicle in Thailand a few months ago and it was quite straightforward, but Lao roads are generally not so good.
