Me and the GF have the same argument every year when getting the car taxed, same happened again yesterday......

Ok, we have FULL insurance with Thanachart Insurance, I view this policy as the equivalent of Fully Comprehensive insurance in the UK. It covers everything INCLUDING 3rd party liability up to 10M Baht or whatever.

Why, oh why, when we go to the car tax office in CM they INSIST (both the insurance people in the office outside AND the government officials inside) we have to spend 600 baht on another insurance with Viriyah Insurance before they issue tax disc?

This policy, as far as I can see, is just for 3rd party liability (same as 3rd party insurance in the UK) when our FULL insurance already covers this?!

Had the same argument with them yesterday and yet again, they insisted we need it!

Why?

That what is called compulsory insurance. Stupid really as it covers no damage and only limited hospital expenses. I would think this would be supplied along with your Full (first class) insurance. My full insurance company supplies the compulsory paper with the tear-off for the tax office. You should ask your insurance agent.

I renewed on Monday, needed inspection (car older than 7 yrs.), blue book (car title) and had to pay "parabol"even though I have insurance. How I understand it is that the parabol is "compulsory" in American terms and the other insurance I have to cover the car is "comprehensive".

Por Lor Bor (compulsory) insurance has been a requirement since 1992 (Motor Accident Victims Protection Act B.E. 2535 (A.D. 1992)). There are a couple of recent topics on this subject. It has been a requirement for that time to have compulsory in order to renew your car taxes. So this is not a new requirement.

I understand that, but if I produce a certificate showing Full Insurance which incorporates third party liability cover at a higher level than the basic 'government' compulsory insurance, I am basically paying for the same cover twice!

My Full Insurance offers up to 10M baht of 3rd party liability cover, whereas the 'government' cover only offers 250,000baht, I believe!

It would be the same as buying Full Insurance in the UK and then when you go and tax your vehicle, you are asked to buy 3rd party liability insurance, which is already covered by your Full Insurance.

Will ask them.....now that does make sense!

Mine does also (Viraya) but the CPTL is appended to the cost of the 1st class insurance as it is a separate requirement. Check your insurance paperwork from Viraya to be sure that the tear off strip is included or not.

You should have two payment forms from Viraya. One for the 1st class and one for the Por Lor Bor as you can see on mine.

You 1st class cover is a "top up" for the compulsory, not a replacement. I'm sure if you look through the small print the 1st class requires the compulsory and the compulsory will be the first to pay out in case of injury, with your 1st class paying out anything extra on top.

That is my point exactly, you have two policies there, the full one has 3rd party liability at 10M baht and the 'compulsory' at 250,000 baht.....both policies covering exactly the same risk and don't believe one is a 'top up' for the other,

Not going to bang on about it (although, I am! rolleyes.gif ) but does not make sense IMO.

Especially as I would think it is highly unlikely you could claim on two policies for the same event!

they still charge you extra, for this cover though, but it makes it easier when you go to renew tax, dont have to go to insurance office in corner and obtain same.

Yes, correct. I do pay for the 'compulsory' AND the first class. Just as Tywais posted above. The point is that only that 'compulsory' tear off is accepted by the tax office. As I already said 'really stupid' but that's the law. TIT ... biggrin.png

If you had the full insurance, then you would have the separate document required to hand in to the tax booth.

You don't, so you haven't.

Not true. The compulsory would pay out policy limits first. Then the 2nd policy would kick in. The 250K THB policy would last all of about 4 days if say for example the person you hit needed brain surgery or something.

Nothing wrong with a little heated debate every now and then! I think I have lost this one though! bah.gif

If you buy more than basic insurance you're subsidising all the amazingly incompetent drivers here.

I self insure for all I can, and for the compulsory 800 baht the insurance company deals with the tax too.....amazingly good service.

Same goes for health. People often get insured illicitly when something's wrong with them, and in any case insured people are measurably less discriminatory about getting unnecessary treatment and meds, because it's "paid for".

But guess who pays.

Anyone knows how the car insurance premiums are calculated?

Everyone pays the same for the compulsory policy which is determined by the government. Then the 1st, 2nd or 3rd class policy that you need to have in addition to the other are (I think) based on the amount of coverage you choose for your car. I've had 2 or 3 different insurance policies for 3rd-class coverage on my car and they were all within 100-200 THB of each other. Insurance is a big market here. They would have to price competitively.
