Ko Lan (เกาะล้าน)

Featured Replies

Does anyone know the real translation of เกาะล้าน, the large island off of Pattaya? It is often called "Coral Island", but the only definitions I know for ล้าน are bald and million.

Any thoughts?

My thoughts are a farang heard a Thai say เกาะล้าน and it sounded to the farang like the Thai said Coral with heavy Thai accent.

Hence it became know as Coral Island. Is there anything on the Isalnd that looks like a bald head?

One more thought. I recall after the Tsunami, english speaking tourists interviewed on TV would call

PiPi Island Koh PiPi. (Koh like in coral). So maybe Koh is a transcription of เกาะ and Koh lan came to

be said coral.

there's lots of Koh Larns all around Thailand, tiny ones that only fisherman call by that name, no one else cares. The one in Pattaya is the most famous, but I don't recall seeing coral there.
