Need To Make Urgent Visa Trip In Asia, Need Advice.

Featured Replies

So I've had a bit of a nightmare with my Ed visa and it seems my visa has expired and I need to leave Thailand ASAP. I know I could just go to Cambodia on a border run trip but I really don't fancy sitting on a bus all day so I'd rather spend some more money and have a short working vacation. My questions are:

Which countries can I easily go to without having to apply for a visa first?

I will be taking my laptop and iPad with me and will need reasonable Internet either in the hotel I'm staying at and/or nearby coffee shops, which cities or areas have this? I was thinking perhaps Jakarta but a friend said the Internet is a joke there even in the big hotels....

These are my other options with pros and cons:

Hong Kong - very expensive :(

Singapore - same as above :/

KL or Penang - I hear Penang is nice but dull, I don't know about the Internet there though, same for KL

Manila - This is probably my preferred choice, I know it's not too expensive but no idea about the Internet there....

Ho Chi Min - I know nothing about this place...

Vientiane - been here before and don't want to go again

Pnomh pen - really don't fancy going here

Any other ideas or suggestions or advice?

Hanoi is one of my favourite cities. Far nicer than HCM

My advice is that you seem to be in the wrong forum. Maybe a travel forum will suit you better ?

No your wrong about Penang, not nice and very dull.

Agreed; moved.

You'll be surprised at how expensive Manila is, especially for the level of (non) service you get. Food sucks, too. Miserable bunch of, "I'm poor, you're rich, gimme money." low-lifes abound.

I'd re-think Phnom Penh (after you learn how to spell it) - there is good food and reasonably priced accommodation, especially if you make the effort to have a look around. Hint: find a guesthouse away from the riverside bar areas.

Internet is surprisingly good, although your mileage may vary from hotel to hotel. People can't be beat.

Couldn`t agree more, Manila really sucks the internet is ok at 5 star hotels but getting to them and spending $200 is hardly worth the effort, the airport is beyond terrible and that sets the scene for the rest of Manila, squatters, garbage, scammers & crime there is nothing to see in terms of culture......if it`s your preferred it will be your first and last. I`d do Phnom Penh

But he will need a visa for Viet Nam and not the other places.

Penang is dull but it's a nice train ride and good food can be found there.

I agree with the anti-Manila crowd. Went there 25 years ago. Returned 3 years ago and it had degenerated...what a dump ! And what desperate-looking people in the backpacker area ! Couldn't find anything much but junk food places.

Wherever you go, be very careful with your computer.
