Todays question is. A friend who is here on a tourist visa accomanying her partner is thinking that rather than do the visa run every month she could get married to him and get on his. My question is this. Would the marriage (assuming they did it at the local wat) have to be registered with the embassy? Would this legally assure her of a visa. His employers are willing to do all the processing at immigration. Would the marriage be recognised in the UK?

Thanks for you help

Foeigners can marry in Thailand as long as the passports, affadavits from Embassy, etc are provided at any Amphur's office. A wat ceremony is not acceptable alone. It is perfectly legal in the UK and does not essentially require more than a translation of the marriage certificate. You would probably be best asking the visa question on the visa forum, as I am no expert on this subject.

A marriage can be held anywhere you like but the legal paperwork is filed at a District Office and signed by a District Official. There is no other way. You can have the official do the paperwork outside the office at a fee but the paperwork must be done and for a foreigner that requires a freedom to marry paper from there Embassy that has been translated and registered with The Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Marriage is a civil ceremony.

There is no registration of marriage required at Embassies (at least not at most - including the UK) as your Thai marriage is legal worldwide. She will be married and will require a divorce to re-marry; here, there or anywhere.

If the spouse has an extension of stay she would be able to obtain a non immigrant O visa stay to match

We got married in Samui last year and got the guy from the local amphur to our ceremony. All legal, no point to deposit your cert at the UKGPRO.
