We've spent the last two months traveling around Thailand collecting durian stories and researching the durian scene. We went to the Chanthaburi World Durian Festival, to Nonthaburi, to a durian factory,to speed eating competitions, to research farms where odorless durian is being developed, to the southern islands, and everywhere in between. Posted June 30, 2012 Share Posted June 30, 2012 I like durian and eat it pretty often when it is less expensive at certain times of year (like right now), but I can not say that I "love" it and do not really get why other people do. LucidLucifer Posted June 30, 2012 Share Posted June 30, 2012 Can't say I like the stuff personally, and i've always wondered about the 'king of fruits' tag it is often given. Why is that? I'm guessing because they are expensive, in the same way beluga cavier and truffles are regarded so highly. Does anyone know if there is any truth in this or is it a myth? She actually sold beer from a little shop in front of her house, so i was inclined to believe her. Basically it's a myth; I have eaten Durian many times with both beer and whisky and experienced no ill effects whatsoever - the only problem is that the flavour of one is in conflict with the flavour of the other. I'm not sure if it's because I am getting older and my olfactory facilities are declining or whether Durian is being engineered to remove much of the smell but to me these days Durian does not smell at all like it did many years ago: I also regret that nearly all the Durian available nowadays is of only 3 varieties - Morn Thong, Chanee and Karn Yao - years ago there were dozens of choices, my favourite being one called Gob which had smaller, thinner seeds and a wonderful aroma and flavour. Be careful eating too much as it causes the body to overheat, especially mixed with alcohol and if you have high blood pressure and old. I know one person who died because of this.
