Another Aeon Question........

Featured Replies

Withdrew 5000 THB from AEON in Udon last Monday. It was 163.17 USD + HSBC charged me 2.50. Today, I went to AEON and used an ING Card. My 5000 THB came out to 158.61 USD.

I don't think the Dollar appreciated 3% in 6 days. Both are debit/credit cards......Any clues? Is this more evidence that all banks are not the same? Cheers!

Different banks will use different rates.................

AEON is not a bank, it is a credit card company that operates ATM's thoughout the kingdom

No one ever said all banks are the same and the difference in exchange rates can be traced back to the bank which issued the ATM card

Go to each banks web site and see what they are paying for your dollars in Thai Baht

Where is the AEON ATM machine in Udorn located? Didn't know they had one there.

I've hit the one in Nong Khai, right handy at Tesco-Lotus, before crossing over to Laos.

About 1.2% maybe due to the currency rates. Sharp rise of the baht on Friday:

I don't know in detail about HSBC and ING.

What credit card company issues the cards (VISA, Master, ?).

As Langsuan Man wrote: the issuing bank/credit card company determines the exchange rate.

For VISA US you can look here:

VISA Europe:

No idea about the others.

There are two that I know of, one at Big C top of the escalator near the food hall and the second in UD Town Tesco Lotus where there is also an AEON office, come out from the tills turn left and its on the right hand side.

but I got 3% more yesterday; not the first time. Aeon Udon is by the Robinson's on the third floor of Central, about 50 meters from the branch, who will point you in the right direction. Both my cards are guaranteed by Master Card.

The AEON machine at the top of the escalators at (the original) Big-C is dodgy. At least twice a month the red 'do not use' screen is lit up. Another time it had my card inside for almost 2 minutes with absolutely no screen activity or buttons working. I was on the point of walking away and reporting the card 'eaten' when the screen announced a verification error and spat the card back out. The AEON machine in the old part of the new Central Plaza is a much newer machine but note it is located one floor UP and on the opposite side of the mall from where AEON and the other banks have their branches. There's no ATM at their branch.

Theres another at the Big Tesco (old one on the ring road) out of the checkouts turn left at the end near the video store

I have no idea why two different Master Cards yield such different results on an AEON ATM?

I am only aware about the pitfall named "Dynamic Currency Conversion" (Bank of Ayudhya does this and their ATMs show that), meaning that not the card issuer but the ATM operating bank determines the exchange rate.

Avoid!

So I am afraid I can shed light on the problem.-

Avoid HSBC?

but I got 3% more yesterday

HSBC charges 3% for foreign transactions (inclusive of the MC 1% fee). ING was bought by Capital One, which charges zip for foreign transactions (including eating the MC 1% fee). Thus, save yourself 3% plus the flat fee -- by shitcanning your HSBC card.
