I had noticed the 3G notification on my phone these past few days but just got an SMS from AIS confirming it is available now in Udon Thani city. I have the spare PC at home running internet via the 3G dongle I bought a couple of years ago for Bangkok use so we will see how that goes. First glance looked decent speeds as it was downloading a Firefox update. Right now I have streaming FM radio and this tablet connecting while mobile. Couldn't do that on the old EDGE/GPRS connection!

Do you happen to know if you are roaming on TOT? Or if it is truly AIS expanding their footprint with 900 MHz 3G?

It looks like TOT has 3G service there on 2100 MHz, and AIS/TOT do have a 3G roaming agreement.

I have an AIS SIM in my smartphone with the unlimited data package enabled and I am on AIS's network. There's been some local disenchantment with ToT's supposed 3G service in that if you live within the area of their office, you 'may' get it. Most farangs I understand haven't bothered but in the last 6 months or so, it appears True have been talking up their 3G rollout. However, as far as I can gather, they are still erecting the towers. Since I got the SMS notification message from AIS, I assume that they have quietly upgraded their existing hardware up here. The logon screen on the PC using the AIS 3G dongle displays HSPDA by the way but not sure if that is something embedded in the GUI or a true statement of the system being accessed.

AIS even have their local 3G availability posted on the 'skylab' (local tuk tuk) sideboard advertising.

Now that I have a use for the 3G dongle, do they have any decent 'internet only' SIM packages on AIS? I just bunged 400 baht onto this one and that only gives 50 hours of connect time. The step daughter will eat that in a weekend!

Not sure what package you got, as 350 Baht should get you 100 hours!

Anyway, on AIS with time based packages and in a 3G capable area, you'll only get 384 kbps.

Details: http://www.ais.co.th/mobileinternet/en/internet-package/#1

To get full speed 3G you'll have to go to a volume based package, i.e. you can be online 24/7, but you're only allowed a certain amount of data transfer.

Details here: http://www.ais.co.th/mobileinternet/en/internet-package/#2

Only the 799B and 899 Baht packages (3 GB and 5GB respectively) are unlimited, meaning after the allotted amount of data transfer, you can still keep surfing until the end of the month 24/7 but at a limited speed of 384 kbps.

All other packages will revert to 1 Baht/minute connected time! You'll have to be careful, however AIS sends plenty of sms messages when you are reaching your limit. Just make sure if using a dongle you actually read those messages!

All the above woks on any one2call prepais simcard.

They do have dedicated "netsim's" with slightly different packages, but nothing really worth it IMO...

^ Thanks monty. The SIM in the dongle was the 'best deal' when I got it over 2 years ago so I guess I can call them up and see what I can get these days. They don't automatically roll over their newest offers! I could go for the same deal as I have on the SIM in my smartphone which is the 'unlimited' 3Gb package at 799 baht + tax. It is adequate for the amount of 3G access I do and I haven't had any overages for years.

The step daughter still lives at the old house where there used to be 3BB internet. She was promised a computer with internet access last year for getting exceptional grades, which she did but shortly afterwards, I moved out and moved the 3BB line with me. Now I am looking for an alternative to give her internet access but since I don't live there any more, she will be unsupervised and will probably go overboard, max it out and cost more. Maybe I can ask AIS for the 5Gb package and ask that it just go 'deaf' when the 5G's is used up and NOT roll-over onto the expensive connection rate. Then, on the monthly top-up, it comes 'live' again. Somehow I doubt they can configure that one as my recollection is that once you went into overage, it required a phone call and cancellation of the maxed out account and initializing an identical new one.

I will also check with 3BB as it may be cheaper to set up a second broadband connection on the old wire at the old house. I recall 3BB had some low prices for a new account. Maybe it will qualify as a 'new' account since it was disconnected about 9 months ago.

Can I used AIS sim in Huawei e583c Mifi? Which one is suitable for a short stay, about a week in Bangkok.

Thanks a lot

Just curious, does anybody know why it took AIS so long to roll out in Udon Thani? It's 9 full months after they went 3G in Khon Kaen! Must be a story behind that . . .

On the 3 and 5 gb you'll never have to pay for overages, it just keeps working at the slower speed.

The at the renewal date it will simply go full speed again!
