RAYONG: -- Environmental activists and Map Ta Phut residents yesterday lodged a complaint against a mayor, accusing him of ignoring questionable practices at a coal processing plant despite more than five years of complaints by the community.

The complainants also asked the Central Administrative Court to revoke construction licences granted by Map Ta Phut mayor Wiriya Bulkul to Thai General Nice Coal and Coke Co and to indict Wiriya for his alleged unlawful judgement in favour of the firm despite open opposition by local residents.

Srisuwan Janya, chairman of the Stop Global Warming Association, led 79 residents in lodging the class-action complaint. He also demanded that future projects in Map Ta Phut undergo mandatory public referendum, environment and health impact assessments (EIA and HIA) under the Constitution, and that officials strictly followed regulations in making decisions that would affect the local environment.

Local community leader Wichian Sakcharoen said the Thai General Nice Coal and Coke compound, a 28-plant facility located in the middle of his community, was near completion and yet there was so far no proof that the construction had been permitted by the municipality and the mayor. He said no proof had been produced by either the firm or the municipality that the operation, regarded as hazardous, had undergone mandatory EIA and HIA.

The chief of provincial industrial operation office, Bundit Thongsricharoen, said the firm had permits to build only the compound and other buildings, but its operations had not been authorised by the Department of Industrial Works, following strong opposition by the locals. He said that, pending an inspection by a team of his officials, he may charge the firm within 10 days with building manufacturing facilities without permission.

What Thailand does NOT need is progress without consideration of people's and surrounding environmental health, enough of that going on already. Just look at the second fire at the petro plant In Bangkok, Sukh soi 64 today. There is a perfect example of poorly (or no) planned progress. With all the wind, solar, and geothermal available here, why coal? What is this, the 1800's?

Your Progress is Bullshit, I want clean air, water and soil, good food and happy people. Progress means better than before...

What Thailand does NOT need

is the Stop Global Warming Association or any of the other eco-dipshit groups (quite often useful idiots of global communist) who have always had their scientific facts wrong due to ignorance, and an ushakeable determination to ignore and/or fabricate facts to further their shortsighted and misguided agenda(s)

With all the wind, solar, and geothermal available here

And no technology let alone infrastructure to make it viable to power the needs of the village, Ban <SNIP!> Issan.

cheesy.gif Why is it, that when you mention any form of cleaner energy alternatives to oil, coal, nuclear, someone crawls out of the woodwork and rabidly attacks you. Denmark produces app 20% of all it's electric energy needs with wind power, and that will increase to 50% in the next 8 years. Does that make all the citizens of Denmark "eco-dipshit groups (quite often useful idiots of global communist)" ? I'd say it makes them visionaries, who have cared enough about their health and environment to build a much cleaner environment for their children to grow up in. Thailand has not a great deal of infrastructure overall, so lack of infrastructure is certainly no excuse for not starting to create one for alternative energy. Thailand purchases a large amount of electricity from Laos yearly now, as well as large amounts of natural gas from Myanmar. It would serve Thailand well to start building a clean sustainable electric energy infrastructure now, especially so since Thailand wants to remain the SE Asian leader in auto manufacturing, and so many car companies are moving to electric vehicles now, (Nissan, Saab 100%, etc). Imagine what Bangkok would look, and more importantly, smell like, with electric vehicles instead of combustion engine ones crowding it's streets? Oh, sorry, forgot, the coal/oil/nuclear proponents don't have any imagination, as evidenced by their clinging to dirty old technologies just like a passenger on the Titanic refusing to get into the life raft.

I'm more interested in who dumped millions of Lego bricks on the beach....
