CIUDAD VICTORIA, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- A car bomb exploded early Tuesday morning outside a government building in a residential neighborhood in northern Mexico, killing two police officers and injuring ten other people, local authorities said on Wednesday.

The attack occurred at around midnight local time in the northern area of Ciudad Victoria, the capital city of Tamaulipas state, when an explosive device which was planted in a vehicle detonated. It happened outside a government building, killing two state police officers and injuring ten others.

Police said three of the injured were in a serious condition.

Investigative teams from the National Defense Ministry, the Attorney General's Office and other government officials are investigating the blast to determine who is behind it. Investigators believe the attack was carried out in retaliation for recent security operations against organized crime.

As the Mexican drug war continues, the country's Attorney General office (PGR) has said at least 12,903 drug-related killings were reported between January and September 2011, although figures for the entire year are not yet available. This will likely bring the total figure for 2011 to more than 17,000, the highest annual number yet.
