Lake Near Luang Nuea?

Hi folks,

On Google maps I see this big body of water to the east of Chiang Mai near a town (?) named Luang Nuea. I'm unfamiliar with the area but am looking for more drivable day trips. Is this a lake? And if so, is it a nice place to drive up and see? Not looking for anything spectacular, just a nice place to visit for an hour, have some food, appreciate nature etc.

That's the Kuang reservoir at Doi Saket. There is a restaurant to the southwest of the easternmost dam. More closer to home is Huay Tung Tao to the north of CM, at the foot of Doi Pui & Doi Suthep. Food available, & better hiking, waterfalls nearby. To get there, head west along Huay Keaw road to the Phucome Hotel, turn right & follow the irrigation canal, past the 700 yr stadium. Keep going til you see signs for Huay Tung Tao.

Sorry got to ask are the signs in English and easily spotted?

Are you on two wheels? Consider the Mae Kuang loop, taking the ferry north across the Mae Kuang reservoir. Though that link is a 4 year old trip report, the phone number for the ferry for the north side still worked as a April this year.

For quiet rural roads close to Chiang Mai nothing beats this route, http://goo.gl/maps/55wo, if you don't mind unimproved roads and rolling a bike on the ferry.

made the trip last week. very easy to find the way and the views are spectacular. well worth the visit. but make sure you come well before 4 as they restrict most of the area around the reservoir by 330.
