Question About Moving Visa From One Passport/Nationality To Another

Featured Replies

Hi. I am new here and this looks like a great forum and resource. I am glad I found it.

I am a dual citizen of 2 different western countries. I have a 1 year visa and work permit in Thailand.

I am thinking about moving my visa from my existing passport and nationality to the other one. I am wondering if this would be a simple process to undertake at the one stop service center?

Also, would there need to be changes made to the work permit as well?

My fear is that I would need to leave the country and re-enter on a new visa and then start the visa and work permit application process all over again. Cheers for any info anyone might be able to provide.

It probably is not possible to do what you want to do. As far as I know immigration will only transfer extensions and etc. over to a replacement passport of the same country as the original.

Why do you want to change from one to the other if I may I ask?

Only extensions can be moved to a new passport of the same nationality, can not move to different national passport.

You must apply for a new work permit with new nationality.

So, yes you must leave the country and start the process again.

I also carry two passport with different nationalities.

Thank you. That is good info. My current visa expires later this year. So I was thinking to wait until close to my current expiry if I am going to make the change over. This way I don't waste money already paid for a current visa.

So is if I was going to leave the country, then re-enter the country using a business visa with my other passport, and then start the process again, should I leave exactly when my visa expires and turn my work permit in? Or should I leave the country and come back on my other passport in 1 month before my current visa and work permit expires and then start the visa and work permit application process before the current visa and work permit expires?

If you plan to return on another passport (different nationality) you should cancel the work permit and permisison to stay (if on extension) before leaving the country and when re-entering apply for a new WP and extension to stay.
