Non-Working Foreigners Living 6+ Months A Year In Thailand

Featured Replies

I am a non-working (retired) American living in Chiang Mai and haven't been back to the US for over 6 years.

This inquiry is for "non-working" single or married foreigners, living in LOS at least 6 to 8 months a year but still enjoy returning to their home country for several months and do not stay with any family member.

I hope some of you can share your housing situation in your home country with the following questions that apply to you,

. do you own your home (house or apartment)?

. if you do not own, do you rent year round or find a sublet for the few months?

. if you leave it unoccupied when returning to LOS, how do you secure it from theft?

. if you either own or rent, do you sublet it out when you return to LOS?

I know there are other housing alternatives out there such as living in a RV, house sitting, etc., so feel free to add any other practical alternatives you have experienced.

Thanks for your useful comments.

I used to own my own house and had it rented out long term. Before that, I rented it out over the winter (being close to the university sure helped) and stayed in it myself over the summer. Lots of hassles finding renters and maintenance and general bills.

Last year, I sold the house and have invested the money from the sale. Now, I rent an apartment for the full year, just closing and locking the door when I leave to head to Thailand for the winter. I have no intention to sublet it at all, just leave it empty over the winter. The manager is aware of the fact that the apartment is empty for that time, and checks occasionally.

Financially, it seems like a loss, but sure is easier than trying to find a good renter to fill in just those winter months, or putting all my stuff in storage and finding a new apartment every spring.
