I got to some headache.

First some background.

Im scandinavian, having a one year visa with re-entry permit. It will expire in December.

My work permit will how-ever expire in October.

I came here on business visa and got now an Non-B extension of stay. With my work permit. ? (This is not 100% clear to me as you can read below)

Im not married to a thai national nor any children here.

I will go and work on a contract in Europe for some months, 2-4 months, contract can be extended but at this time not sure.

I got to the point thinking of canceling my Thai work-permit and then apply for a new one.

But if the consulting contract isent more than 2-4 months its just not worth it.

I asked in immigration at Bangkok, about my Visa linked to my work permit. Their answer was: No link, I got my Visa to December, mai pen rai work permit.

If work permit exipires I still got my visa to december and can return to Thailand on my re-entry permit before December.

During this time I could make any new work permit.

- So is this a clear case?

- What is the worst scenario than can happen?

Its not like im overstaying as im abroad and can simply return on tourist visa in worst case?

- What can I do or should do?

- If I want to extend my work permit when im abroad? Third year coming. (Its my second year now, even if I had to make a new one/ new book last year)

- If I want to cancel it?

- What should I prepare in paper work, do it require my real passport to get a extension of work permit?

- Next is the visa of course but if we first look on this work permit dilema?

Can I leave it to someone else to take care of while im abroad? What would be the best option-options in your mind? Advice much appriciated.

Go to the dept of labor (if in Bangkok) and ask. Was there to renew my WP yesterday. They are very helpful.

We brought all the documents for WP renewal and all was OKed the same day. Went in a 11AM, picked up the renewed WP at 1PM.

It is not clear if you are still working for the Thai company in Europe or not and that may be critical to know because if not working for the Thai company your extension of stay immediately ends and you must visit immigration with a letter from them to cancel it.

If you are not working in Thailand you must cancel your work permit and your extension of stay ends the same day you stop working.

You must start the process all over again if you want to work in Thailand again.

Extending is not an option as you can not show taxes paid during the time you work in Europe.

Yes this was one of the questions from the immigration officer.

Answer: I said I still work for the Thai company. ( Yes I will work for our Thai company as im kind of partner, here in Thailand)

But the contract I will get, is personal to me. ( but this is a technicallity? as I still pay my tax, etc. on my salary and income here in Thailand, so will the company)

If cancelling this while abroad? Say my empolment got ended during my abroad visit?

What would be the procedure then?

Do not believe any issue other than a small fine involved if you have to obtain a work permit in the future and previous was not canceled - but it appears that would likely be canceled by your employer if/when your employment ends.

So If I pay taxes, socials and all related fees for my personal income here in Thailand and The company is taking care of their share in all these.

All will run as normal.

How would the above questions change? as my work permit will still expire during my abroad visit.

Sorry I dident mentioned that I will pay tax on thai salary and im still in the Thai companys books during the contract abroad. Appriciate all views.

I suspect your company lawyers may be able to renew work permit with your authorization if still employed and company can meet the requirements.

My local labour office wants to see my passport also.

They might accept a certified copy, also depending on the contacts the company has with labour.

Hello, ok I made the decision to let the company handle it.

So when im abroad they can cancel my work permit easy and visa almost as a one stop service, I dont need to participate at all?

If we will try renew it in October we will leave paper work and copys of everything with my book to labor department.

At this time I should know if the contract would be worth while, for a longer stay or not.
