Old Chinese Paper Money

Featured Replies

I found a stash of old Chinese Paper Money and gold certificates-one side in English, dollar denominated pre-1930, yuan denominated 1930-1949.

Where in CM can I get this fairly appraised?

Can you post some scans?

Just a suggestion; there is a textile and money museum on the maeRim road..its onthe right side as i recall on the way to the 700yr stadium but not too far away from Nimmen end.

there must be a curator there?

then there is the chiang mai numismatic museum (treasury hall) on Ratchadamnoen, antique coins etc.

I would check it out first before taking the treasure trove with you or you may never see it again!

I was thinking along those lines; if these notes are truly valuable then someone will find some reason to confiscate them, especially if you don't own the property where they were found. If you are confident you are the rightful owner of these notes and that they may be valuable, perhaps you should get them appraised somewhere like Singapore. It has a large Chinese population, some of them quite wealthy.

If you do try for somewhere in Chiang Mai, first put them somewhere safe and take just one.

Say you found THIS, to test the water.

If it's of value you will soon find out.

You didn't mention where you "found" them. If it was a rented property I would get them apraised by submitting scans to various international dealers. At least they are going to say either valueless play money, or when can we inspect them!! I would not be touting them round Chiangmai.

try ebay. There are plenty of people selling old Chinese currency. by the looks of it, I wouldn't worry to much about losing the "treasure trove".

Maybe you could try one of the guys that deals with old Buddha amulets, maybe they can tell you who is dealing with old notes. And as said above, bring one or two, not the whole wad. There is one guy on Thaphae Road opposite the AIS HQ.
