Two nabbed after Army base attack

The Nation

30186467-01_big.JPG

NARATHIWAT: -- Two suspects have been arrested after a soldier and two civilians were killed in an attack on an Army base in Narathiwat's Rusoh district on Tuesday, an officer said yesterday.

Colonel Pramote Phrom-in, a public relations officer at Sirindhorn camp, said some 20 insurgents dressed like security officials had carried out the gun attack from two pick-up trucks and three motorcycles. He said several of the insurgents had been injured and two nabbed in a manhunt.

Deputy Prime Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapha, who was scheduled to visit South border provinces last night, said he would make changes to the security plan during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which runs from July 20 to August 20 this year. He said these changes were necessary because insurgents might be planning to carry out major attacks and may target a military base in a community area.

HM the King's condition gradually improving, medication stopped

image_201207190932509D149FA4-0FF8-1BE3-287F7D73E45A7B5D.jpg

BANGKOK, July 19 -- His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej's condition is gradually improving and he can move normally, with his heart, lungs and neurological system functioning properly, according to the Bureau of the Royal Household.

Announcement No 55 of the Bureau of the Royal Household issued Wednesday quoted the Committee of Royal Physicians as saying that HM the King could do normal body movements as his heart, lungs and neurological system, according to the examination, are functioning normally so that the intravenous medication, administered to him since last Thursday, was discontinued on Tuesday.

The monarch’s general condition was significantly improving, his physicians said, and he has good appetite and is sleeping well, said the statement.

King Bhumibol experienced twitching in his right hand and a slightly increased pulse rate last Thursday, before a computer scan found bleeding in his brain's outer membrane. The monarch had been given medicine intravenously and recovered Friday morning, with a normal pulse rate and blood pressure and no more twitching.

The palace at that time said that the physicians asked that the king refrain from his royal activities for the time being.

The world's longest-reigning monarch has been in residence at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital since Sept 2009 when he was hospitalized with fever, fatigue and a lung inflammation. He recovered from those symptoms but remained in hospital ever since for nourishment.

His health has improved in recent months, allowing him to make a trip to the ancient capital of Ayutthaya in May. (MCOT online news)

Authorities in North and upper central region urgently dredging rivers

NAKHON SAWAN, 19 July 2012 (NNT) – Authorities in several areas in the North and the upper central part of the country are urgently dredging rivers for more efficient water release system in preparation for speculated flood hazards.

Nakhon Sawan’s Governor revealed that several dredging projects are under way from the middle to the mouth of the Chao Phraya River, or from Nakhon Sawan to Samut Prakan, after many sections are found to be too shallow and might hinder the flow of flood water. The dredging process is conducted simultaneously in nine provinces.

In Phichit Province, the Marine Department is using 19 backhoe trucks to dredge the Yom River, especially around low areas, to prevent flooding when more rain comes.

Meanwhile, over 100 army technicians from Ratchaburi Province traveled to Pitsanulok Province on Wednesday to help dredge the Yom River from Uttaradit to Phitsanulok, covering nearly 20 kilometers. The dredging is expected to take 60 days to complete.
