Mental Heath Treatment Of Thais

Featured Replies

Until resently my sister in law was treated for mental heath problems for free in a governmet hospital in Khon Khan. Now the hospital is charging my wifes family. Does anyone know the details of these changes, or where we can get advice on treatment. My wifes family cant afford to pay the charges, and nether can I, and they are told they will not recive treatment unless they can pay.

Im also told that since she has refused to take tablets then the hospital will stop treating her too. Its then up to the family to restrain her at home. Surely this cant be the way thais treat there mentally ill?

I can't help much but as far as your second question is concerned, this is for sure better than the way people were treated in the UK up until the 80s. When you were in, you were in, and it was chemical clobbering every day, very difficult to get out again.

There are several health scheme's, you need to find out under which she falls and then can contact the office for that scheme to see what is covered and what not.

You could call the government information line (1111) and they will put you in contact with the right person to answer your questions.

A doctor can only treat a patient if they want to cooperate (or the family makes sure they cooperate). If the cooperation is lacking there might not be much a doctor can do. Practically and legally.

Under circumstances, basicly the patient being a danger to herself or others, a person can be commited against her will. But if these conditions are not met, a doctor cannot force someone to take medication or undergo treatment.

Update on Treatment by Thai Doctors. Today local doctor and a doctor from mental hospital in Khon Khan came to visit. They have organised injections to be given at a local hospital every month, at our cost, but aparently they wont have effect for around 6 months.

So for the next 6 months we are left dealing with a violent member of the family and they still refuse any stay in hospital. This has the potential of ending very badly but it would apear that here they dont care,
