Defence Ministry keeps evidence against Abhisit under wraps

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Defence Ministry has decided not to publicly disclose evidence related to the conscription records of Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva for fear the issue might get politicised.

"Evidence has been submitted to the Office of the Ombudsman and I don't know what implications they will have for Abhisit or in politics," Defence Minister Sukampol Suwannathat said yesterday.

In response, Abhisit said Sukampol's remarks and his ministry's moves were part of an attempt to help red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan, who is facing a libel suit for accusing the Democrat leader of evading military conscription.

Meanwhile, Sukampol said as far as he knew, a conscription officer had been discharged for being involved in allegedly falsifying Abhisit's military records so he could be appointed as lecturer at the Royal Chulachomklao Military Academy. This job allowed Abhisit to serve out his mandatory military service in lieu of being drafted almost three decades ago.

Election Commission member Sodsri Satayathum said yesterday the problems related to Abhisit's conscription record should not have any effect on his MP status because it was not one of the qualifications required of an MP candidate.

Questions in relation to Abhisit's conscription records have been raised and rebutted several times in Parliament, and came under the spotlight again when the Democrat leader filed a libel lawsuit against Jatuporn. The case is currently undergoing judicial review.

Once tensions started rising in relation to the reconciliation and charter change bills, Pheu Thai Party's legal team decided to file a complaint in May requesting a new round of investigation. The Office of the Ombudsman is in the process of collecting evidence in relation to this case.

Earlier this month, Jatuporn was convicted for libel against Abhisit in another case. The Criminal Court sentenced him to six months in jail and Bt50,000 fine, but the jail term was suspended for two years since Jatuporn has never been convicted in a similar case before. The red-shirt leader has filed an appeal.

All the "Gingers"' can do is deflect from the catastrophe that is the Thaksin administration. Weak attempt.

Me : Abhisit is in big sh_t biggrin.png

My wife (fervent democrat supporter, member of FB's Korn fan club) : Everybody do it, it's politically motivated angry.png

Me : But Abhisit stands for honesty and against corruption, and here he has been caught red handed lying and maybe even bribing a government official

My wife : ... (angry silence)

Me : Ok, I understand, I prepare my bed in the dog house hit-the-fan.gif

Mr. Abhisit's avoidance of the conscription may not go down well with those that did their service.

Oh well, he did have to sacrifice for his country when he did all public service activities. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any evidence of his public service. Must be a mass conspiracy to hide it. wink.png

As you apparently have seen the non-publicly disclosed evidence, could you please share it with the forum?

I would expect that a loyal citizen of the nation volunteered, especially since he publicly has espoused doing one's duty. As the scion of a wealthy well connected family, I'm sure he wouldn't have waited to be conscripted , but would have volunteered. Unfortunately, I can't find any record of his service. As you are well informed of such matters, would you be kind enough to confirm when he served.

Thanks,

Well - people in glass houses and all that.

What percentage of politicians DIDN'T avoid conscription do you think?

Sons and daughters of politicians never go to fight in wars, with some seriously microscopic exceptions. It is always poor families' kids who get sent to die in wars, sent by politicians whose own kids are sitting at home safe and sound. And that has not changed in thousands of years.

If he has broken the law, then obviously that is wrong. In a broader sense it means one less fighter and one more thinker in Thailand, which I think is for the best because I'm a pacifist.

But law is law, and nobody is above it.

So this administration is any different than Abhisits? biggrin.png

I always wonder why it takes TV dwellers so long to realize their may be black hats (Ying Thaks) but that does not mean their opponents wear a a white one. Perhaps too many John Wayne movies when young.

Can you find any evidence of ANY serving thai politicians who have served army conscription.

I can't.

Conscription is the reserve of the poor. The middle class up do not even enter the Army conscript lottery because they do reserve training which in Thailand is high school army cadets.

"The Defence Ministry has decided not to publicly disclose evidence related to the conscription records of Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva for fear the issue might get politicised."

Merely stating that, they made this politicized.

The mind imagines far more than the truth presents.

It would probably be better, at this point, to simply come clean and move on.

Baggage slows down the process.

hahahaha...

take a question directed at someone else and obtusely and oddly direct questions back to me?

I don't have access to the non-publicly disclosed evidence that JurgenG apparently has.

Perhaps direct your questions to him as I have.

He's the one that evidently has the answers.

Can you please expand this? Are you saying that expensive private schools provide a way to avoid subscription?

Any and all M4 to M6 high school students are Army cadets (army reserve training) This applies to government and private schools .

The poor kids generally do not go above M3. Therefore they have to do the conscript lottery.

The fact that Abhisit is suing Jatuporn for defamation (again) should indicate that he has some grounds.

it seems that the sons do get conscripted, but miraculously become junior officers. Chalerm's murderous sprout was a lieutenant when he decided to take extended leave in Cambodia while dad sorted the witnesses. In oz, this was frowned upon for our conscripts, but in miracle Thailand, it actually lead to a promotion (possibly due to time in service? ).

What's worse? Avoiding conscription as a teenager or avoiding parliament as a Prime Minister?

Well he is head of a political party that has avoided parliament (well at least being PM of it ) for 20 years. The army looked after him in the end though.

Wonder if this is going to be another of his "extracting the truth out of him is like getting blood from a stone" episodes.

Such as his last "truthful" declaration when he discovered/revealed he was of dual nationality after all?

Why is it when you're talking about abhisit you're always bringing up Calerm or Jaturporn? Just because they did it doesn't mean abhisit can as well

Does this sound like a familiar refrain, it should.................

Well there's no conscription for women in Thailand so I think that answers your question - or did you just ask that question so that you could post your hilarious comment about women and shopping.

I'm sure Yunla will back up Yingluck against being used as a male stereotype as she is a peaceful democratic activist, sorry, maybe not, we're talking about Yingluck and she is the devil Asmodeus (basically a hebrew god of sex and shopping) in yunlas eyes.

Hmmm - could it be that this thread is about Jatuporn making accusations re Abhisit's military service, for which he is being sued. The only mention of Chalerm was an indication that his son was from an influential family.

I've seen Yingluck being backed-up rather firmly once before, on a red-Tshirt a while ago. Her brother Thaksin was holding her firmly from behind, as she leaned forwards in the classic Heimlich Maneuver. If her throat was blocked somehow, that Heimlich Maneuver certainly saved her life, for which I personally felt great jubilation.

Is that the kind of "back up Yingluck" you were referring to?

How interesting: As thanks for falsifying documents the idiot in charge got discharged so he can get a job at the most prestigious military academy of Thailand.... now we know why all the graduates of that academy are worthless.
