thelongshoot
I was reading a thread about a guy who had his phone stolen. He was Indian, and one poster mentioned that Thais do not respect Indians too much. It made me ponder.... Which nationalaties do Thais love and hate the most? Is there a particular nation of people that they love? That they hate? Ive always been aware that they dont get the warm and fuzzy with Nigerians (and by extension any African people). Are there any others? Im English. Mostly when I tell Thais I am English, they smile widely and say "Khun Angrit goooood". Then again, that may be complete <deleted> as I have been told by the Mrs that many Thai's see us English as, quote "number one bad habit" losly translated as rascals and rouges. So. Starting at the most well recieved and finishing at most hated. What do you reckon?

Peppy
They only like white people as much as they do because they're from so far away. Opinions on blacks, Arabs, Indians, and other East Asians are middling, as are the distances to their countries of origin. Immediate neighbors are despised. The closer they are, the more they hate them. Edited July 21, 2012 by Peppy

Cobalt60
This may come as a surprise and a bit of a blow to your research, but I have not talked to every Thai on the face of the earth about every other race on the planet, so, sadly, I can not add to the knowledge base. The only answers you will get, will be personal opinion based on the prejudice of the respective corespondant replying. Popular Post Beetlejuice
I think this is a very good topic and should be brought out into the open, providing of course posters know where to draw the line, don`t act like idiots and not go over the top. I have over 30 years experience of Thailand and this is my perception, for what it`s worth. The Thais don`t particularly like farangs (Europeans), but they do tolerate us providing we tow the line and do not trend on their turf. All white people are considered the same to Thais; they do not differentiate between nationalities, Protestants, Catholics or Jews. Regarding other South East Asians, the Thais opinion of these groups are more of class structure rather than race. For example they regard the Japanese and the Chinese with high esteem, but consider the Cambodians, Vietnamese and Burmese as belonging at the bottom of the heap due to most of them coming from nations of no wealth. There is a saying among Thais. If one sees a poisonous snake and an Indian together, than put the Indian out of action first. This also includes people of the Middle East. Don’t know why? But the Thais have always been wary of South Asians and have a low regard for them. The Thais haven’t had much experience with black people as yet and intend to be a little scared of them, the same as they were with farangs during the past. A Thai girl friend of my wife in the States married a black man. All during the marriage the Thai girl’s family refused to be associated with their black son in law and even refused to meet him. So even here in the LOS, racism still raises it`s ugly head, only unlike in the West it lies more within the minds of the people rather than being brought out into the open as is typical of many things Thai. But sadly although racism can appear to be dormant in Thailand, it`s still there. Edited July 21, 2012 by Beetlejuice

How well integrated you are is factor too, though. If you're Burmese or Cambodian and speak very little to no Thai, you're definitely at the bottom. If you were born here and know the language and culture as a native, it still depends on your race, but instead being a case of "the closer your country of origin, the more they hate you", it's more like, "the closer your country of origin, the more they accept you", because the closer you are, the more you look like them. Of course if you speak to them as a native, they'll accept you as a native on an individual basis, but from afar, if you don't look like them, even if you were born here, they'll still assume you're a foreigner and judge you on that before they meet you.

Absolutely spot on. Over the years I have come to terms with this and accepted the situation. As a matter of fact being the novelty farang can have it`s benefits and it`s disadvantages, which would take me about 100 posts to explain, so I won’t bother. Providing foreigners learn to acknowledge the fact that they will always be classed as outsiders within all Thai communities, than they can live in peace here and just get on with they’re lives, rather than concern themselves with how they are viewed within Thai eyes and minds. All my kids are well intergraded into Thai society and are considered as equals in Thailand, which is all that matters to me.

What impresion do they set that the rest of us dont, in comparison? They dont seem real friendly imo and strike me as a little bossy. Just my humble opinion. NanLaew
Yes, the Japanese have invested hugely in Thailand to the extent of building highways for the Thai's to drive their Japanese cars on so big respect there. More like a benevolent benefactor and the lowly beneficiary. Throughout history, the Cambodians and Burmese have frequently been at war with Thailand, sometimes they won, sometimes they lost so there's no respect there at all. More like football fans; Celtic v. [the piss artists formerly known as] Rangers

Thais that don't work with tourists have a weird Victorian era view of the English as being very polite, refined, and aristocratic people. A Thai that works or lives near tourists is going to encounter lots of drunken hooligans so won't have the same view. pauljones
Allot of it has to do with skin color, age or wealth. Who wais who first? For example, if you trade in your Benz for a Toyota, you will find your doorman moving a bit slower.

DP25
Many Americans like to refer to Canada as "America's retarded cousin". So why would Americans who put canook flags on their bags and tell people they are Canadian prefer to be considered retards than tell people they are American when travelling... I've never actually met an American who does this. Canadians and Brits like to joke around that we do but if it happens it is extremely rare. Canadians sometimes put a Canadian flag on their bag, but Americans don't normally put ANY flag on our bags.
geriatrickid
I would say that Americans are generally seen as being a cut above the rest. or at least thats what you keep telling yourselves....legend in your own imaginations and all that... personnally think the least offensive people I have ever come across in my travels are the Canadian's....and guess that why a lot of Americans when travelling put canook flags on their bags and tell people they are Canadian when asked.. So if indeed our colonial cousins are a cut above the rest why would some of their citizens misrepresent their nationality ?....shouldnt they be proud of their nationality and travel the world handing out apple pie and building white picket fences for people ? I like Canadians too. Many Americans like to refer to Canada as "America's retarded cousin". It's also worth noting that Canadians are so nice because they spend their lives living in the shadow of a Mighty neighbor. They have no choice but to be nice You do recall that in the only war fought between the USA and Canada in 1812, the Canadians who were outnumbered and outgunned, defeated the US invaders, don't you? They even burnt down the US White House. Amercians have a memory problem when it comes to that conflict. Jefferson's idiotic comments are similar to the empty rhetoric some Thais made when during the Temple dispute with Cambodia. Back to the thread, based upon my own observations I think Scandanavians and Japanese come out on the top of the list. As noted by others, all whities look the same to Thais, but the Scanadnavians usually stand out as they are not as disrespectful as others (althought some of the Swedish and Norwegian males in my building are posterboys for obnoxious dunks.) Coming in near the bottom are the Middle Easterners and Africans. At the very bottom are the Burmese and Cambodians who are considered fair game to be exploited.Everytime I read some sob story on TVF, I want to write, just imagine if you were Burmese. LennyW
Scottish are the most respected, just watch a Thai's face light up at the mention of Scotch whisky!!! - but that is a given for any country apart from England!! Got to be a toss up between Burmese and American for the least respected, Burmese being more of a local thing whilst Americans are universally viewed with suspicion wherever they go!
