Govt to allow pregnant migrant workers to give birth here

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Under a proposal by the Department of Employment, illegal female migrant workers who become pregnant while working in Thailand will be allowed to stay on and give birth here, and their newborns would be allowed to stay legally with their mothers, director-general Prawit Khiangphol said Monday.

Under existing regulations, such women are repatriated to give birth in their countries before returning to work, leaving their children at home. Prawit did not say when the change would be put into practice.

The government eventually plans to allow female migrant workers whose nationalities have been verified and who are allowed to work in Thailand to give birth here and receive full maternity assistance under the social security scheme. Children born to such mothers would be certified by the embassies of their parents' home countries and allowed to stay with their parents until they return home at the end of their employment contracts.

Thai forensic science system to be standardized

BANGKOK, 23 July 2012 (NNT) - The Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS) has been urged to enhance its forensic system and database to prepare for the ASEAN Community.

CIFS Director MD Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunand stated in the “Forensic Science for Human Rights” seminar that Thailand at present is lacking standard in its forensic system, especially in the working process and the DNA database. She stressed that since Thailand will soon become part of the ASEAN Community, a higher operational standard has to be established for the CIFS in order to be on the same par as other ASEAN nations.

MD Khunying Pornthip also disclosed that the CIFS will cooperate with ASEAN and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region to set up an ASEAN forensic community. The CIFS has reportedly received cooperation from Argentina in educating and training the Thai forensic staff on the autopsy of unidentified bodies, which is a field Argentina has expertise in.
