Why Does My Golden Retriever Start Hacking When He Runs?

Featured Replies

Hi, My Golden Retriever always hacks when he starts to run. He opens his mouth like he's going to vomit but he never actually vomits. He hacks and coughs and then stops after a few seconds. He only does this after he's been running. He's done this for about a week now. He's only a year old and is in good health other than this.

It can have several causes, such as:

collapsed trachea (my pug has this and hacks up regularly some slime)

problem with the larynx or esophagus

recent bordetella vaccination

onset of kennel cough

heart problems

Best is to visit your vet and have your dog checked out. Maybe including an X-ray of the trachea.
