When Everything Is New

Sawadee ka!

I'm a 19-year-old girl who managed to escape the danish cold and learn more things about her thai roots.

This is my first time ever being in chiang mai, and if everything goes as planned I'll stay her for the next 9 months.

I'm therefore attending to the AUA course from august 13th 2012 and since it is a very known language school here I have a few questions which some of you might be able to answer:

1. one of the classroom rules is: "dress appropriate. no shorts or tank tops are allowed".

Does it mean that I can't wear "t-shirts" without sleeves, since I wouldn't catagories all shirts without sleeves as tankstops (does anyone get what I mean?) or is it just not allowed to show shoulders? and since they mention shorts, can I then still wear a dress which is lengthen above knees? Cause I've seen school uniforms which didn't cover the knees. It might be some stupid questions, but I really don't want to offend anyone.

I'm usually very social and would too love to hear some good ways to meet new people? Do you know any interest clubs I could find?

I love to photograph and be creative!

Hope that someone will be able to help me out a little :)

Linda

With 'Thai roots' I'm surprised the clothing etiquette wasn't clarified for you long ago.

Welcome to TV. I suggest you go and ask the school that if what you want to wear is appropriate.

Check these out if you're interested in photography.

The next meeting at CMPG is on Focus Stacking and the DAA has interesting exhibitions running all the time.

There is a website called facebook, apparently you can meet everyone in the world on it.

and at a more local level, drink a few beers and you will meet many people.....but not before you go into the AUA,otherwise your dress code will be irrevelant

well not that I ever have seen myself as dressing provocative (and not that my mom ever would have let me if I actually wanted to) and I too went to a private school wear clothes showing too much skin wasn't allowed, (there is no such thing as school uniforms in denmark, with a few exceptions as always) but I guess my questions goes more to if anyone knows how strict they are when it comes to this rule. Since I don't have much clothes with me it would be nice to know if needed to buy some new. Especially since I only then have one pair of jeans.

I would think you would be OK in a T-shirt but always wear a bra under. Short skirts are fine but keep in mind that most Thai ladies wear shorts under their short dresses. You may be surprised to know that Thais are much more conservative when it comes to clothing.

I would also suggest you not be too open about your personal life on this site or any other, you are a young and vulnerable young lady in a foreign land and there are those who would take advantage of that.

In Thailand only girls of a 'certain type' show their shoulders in public.

Nipples outlines are also considered extremely rude.

I wouldn't worry about shorts or dress length, nobody else does.

Thanks! I'm usually very aware of what i write online, weirdly I slipped this time. But thanks for the reminder. I guess I feel a little bit too comfortable at my "new parents" already haha :)

Dont take this the wrong way but you're going to be much happier by not worrying to much about what some people perceive to be 'proper' dress, 'proper' Thai culture as if thats a fixed thing that hasn't changed in 200 years. AUA is a business, you are the customer. Wear whatever makes sense to you. You sound very Western, there is no way ever anyone is going to mistake you for a 'certain type' of girl. I went through this myself and you can either live your life according to what total strangers (Thai and foreign) perceive to be 'proper', or you can live your own life.

Back to your usual quality posts, I see.

OP, if you're pretty, you can probably make friends with some Thai girls pretty quickly. Just be friendly, smile, and laid back. Maybe hang around CMU, offer to teach some English. If you like the outdoors, there's a some good places to see. Good luck finding Thai people to go on a long hike with you, though. :)

I don't think being pretty is a requirement. From personal experience I can make friends with Thai girls pretty quickly too, and I'm not all that pretty.

Well, I suppose I could have added short like you.

Sorry, man... I just think you should try to help a young person like this out, rather than look down your nose at her. Can you explain how your post was meant to assist her in anyway? Can you explain what you meant by your post?

FWIW, in my experience, Thai women get really excited to meet a cute farang girl.. That's just my experience.

I have a lot of respect for this young lady coming here, as I think it took a lot of guts to do what she's doing, and I think she'll probably do a lot more with her life than I have. Gl to you, Linda.

Theos, let me know if you've got anything for me other than insults.

Maybe where you live Tommo, but not in CM.

OP, a lot of the girls wear short shorts and what can only be termed as hooker heels!

I honestly say, dont sweat it. Bring the things you LIKE.

Thai are pretty prudish about anything regarding breasts..(god forbid nipples are revealed! :D). Usually will be reactive to a decent cleavage, but are ok with bum skimming shorts...lol.

As long as you look clean and tidy and presentable, that counts for so much.

As said..really dont sweat it too much!

You said not in CM, then went on to agree with everything I posted ?????????????

Should have clarified, sorry. I meant the bearing shoulders part.

I see girls in strappy tops here a lot or strappy topped dresses.

A friend who lived in the south said that would be considered inappropriate, but in CM seems to be ok.

The only place in CM where it would be very inappropriate are at Temples (even though i have seen girls wearing strapping tops, for me its still a no no personally). I always have a shawl or cardigan etc packed in my scooter box for "just-in-case" situations.

I can assure you, bare shoulders in public, in CM is not OK.

(unless you are a foreigner)

Funny how womens dress codes are always fiercely debated. Mens dress codes..less so.

He who is without shorts and sandals, cast the first stone.

Bare female shoulders on a Thai native in CM is acceptable and not uncommon, perhaps not so in the more remote villages but in CM proper it's OK.

I think there is a difference between daytime and nighttime.. During the day, sure most women would wear something with sleeves (of any length) Nighttime though, it's different.

Every friday night my Facebook news feed fills up with sleeveless (or spaghetti-strapped) women in pubs all over Chiang Mai.

Also, at fancy parties (like weddings) some very nice and open dresses are worn.

Going purely on my Thai female friends daytime dress, of which are respectable ladies, some of which feature in local CM social pages, wear strappy tops.

Some business owners in their own rights. (one lady owns a resort, she did it on her own, and not only wears strappy tops, shows cleavage! ..and does it with absolute style)

Some single, some attached.

I also have Thai female friends that are from more humble walks of life. Those girls in general do dress maybe a little more conservatively. However, i have STILL seen them wear simple strappy dresses and tops..and have NEVER seen anyone treat them with disdain or consider them disrespectful or improperly dressed...
