Popular Post camerata
"The whole secret of existence is to have no fear." - Buddha Yes, this is just another of the many fake Buddha quotes to be found on Facebook and Twitter. It is actually from a talk given by Swami Vivekananda in the US in 1895. Now there is a site, Fake Buddha Quotes, that investigates unlikely-looking quotes. Some turn out to be real quotes that have been distorted, some are genuine but obscure, and others are just fake. The full list of fake Buddha quotes is here.
rockyysdt
Hi Camerata. Is this one worth "pinning"? It's always useful being able to discern fake material from the Buddhas real quotes.
lungmi
Be carefull. English translations of the Holy Book are infested with Christian connotations.
Several
Perhaps someone can help me here, having trouble with the line 'fathom long carcass.' The unit of measurement is, I believe, imperial. Yes thats a bit niggly and there was obviously an equivalent unit/s in Buddhas time. Carcass? Not yet. It will be, but this is an inaccurate assesment. Anapanasati would be rather difficult. Neither of these words are in the Pali English Dictionary. I'm wondering what the original Pali says and whether this line has been subject to 'poetic license'? camerata
Along with wishy-washy New Age fake Buddha quotes, I recently came across this bastardized cartoon version of the Buddha's life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euqjpCQjrjU The Buddha's father looks like a Mongol. The carriages and palaces have Chinese designs. And as the Buddha's mother is about to give birth the voice on the soundtrack is singing: I hear the voice of God The father of man Saying don't be scared It's part of the plan One of her attendants then exclaims: "Oh my God! Maya has given birth! It's a boy! Oh, he's so cute!" I couldn't watch any more of it...
weary
Seems excellent for aversion examination and equanimity practice.
