Me, my wife and son are planning to go to KonKhaen. I would also like to see chaing Mai!

What are my best options in travelling, wether it be train bus or flying!

Please can you advise!

Drive by yourself only if you are experienced with that. Bangkok-Khon Kaen is very easy, but going from there to Chiang Mai is somewhat challenging.

There are four flights by Thai Airways to Khon Kaen during weekdays and three flights on the weekend. Advance booking is recommended.

Fly, I speak with 10 years experience of living in LOS. If you cant afford to fly, dont go.I have been in death accidents on the roads here.

Ive lived here for 10 years ,keep of the roads, Ive been in death bus accidents, if you cant afford train of plane,dont travel.

Bangkok to Khon Kaen can be easily done by plane, train or bus.

The overnight sleeper train is fun.

From Khon Kaen to Chiang Mai you are a bit more limited.

Bus or the new small airline who only fly a couple of days a week.

You can also fly from Udon Thani to Chiang Mai with Nok Air.

Nakhon Chai Air offers very comfortable and reliable bus services. All drivers are tested for alcohol and drugs before departure. I bought a SUV 2 years ago, and have since then made several long road trips through Thailand totaling more than 40.000 km, and find driving in Thailand more relaxing than in Turkey, Egypt or Morocco

I personally enjoy a bus ride and looking out the window. Something like a 6 hour drive is about right. They typically stop for a break somewhere in the middle of the trip. Bus from Mo Chit in bangkok up to Sukhothai was just perfect. One thing to watch out for is the "Plastic" or vinyl seats. They just don't breathe. Seems hit or miss if you get some sort of polyester or cloth type seat that is porous. Having said that, a small modest seat cushion, thin layer of foam etc. might be worth getting.

Bus is fine, just try to avoid the overnight ones. Driving pretty much anywhere in the world after dark is more dangerous.

There's some nice scenery on the way. Get a window seat!

The only challenge I found was getting teh right road out of Lampang to go to Chiang Mai.

I can't agree with you Stoneyboy. I used to bus regularly to and from BKK to Chaiyaphum then on to KK. I spend most of the 7/8/9 hour (choose which one fits) journey in abject terror because of the lack of driving skills of the majority of Thais. I now fly but don't go as often 'cos Thai has the monopoly and it gets expensive. Yet to try a train.

Once here in Chiangmai there are plenty of options to get around. Don't worry. Find out for yourself. Every kind of transportation you can imagine. Some of the above comments are ridiculous.

We always take private car wherever we go. This time I fancy a change, my son is a bit older and I want a fun trip. He loves trains, so the overnight sleeper train sounds good!

Where do I get the train from. Can you get it to chaing Mai?

Stoneyboy is wrong 100% The buses are cheap efficient and comfortable if a tad cold Nakhonchaiair is good. The commentatotor who said that is right. As a last resort I would hire a car and drive if I had bulky stuff to take.

Sorry Stonyboy not you, it is Croweater who is wrong about the Buses. They are fine. You can have a road accident anywhere in the world. It would be bad luck.

Think we need your itinerary to best advise. I live here and driving is a nightmare and you will not see anything cos of the concentration required by the driver. You can hire a mini bus with driver but not for me if l think about my families safety. There are good bus companies that provide a good gold star service, such as NCL.
