Hi, I am using an Axen Air card with DTAC sim in my notebook for GPRS internet connection.

If I want to change over to EDGE, can I just buy a new card or do I have to change my sim (and account with DTAC) also?

Thanks.

Just upgrade to an edge capable card, and it will use edge wherever available (mainly BKK for Dtac)

If no edge available, it will automatically use the regular gprs network...

No upgrade in sim needed.

Thanks very much for that. Anyone upgraded to EDGE and keen to share your thoughts (reliability, speed, worthwhile?)

I have a Edge capable card and I am using Dtac's unlimited post paid internet

for 1200 baht a month. Where in Bangkok has Edge coverage? How do I tell if I am using Edge?

EDGE is available from the airport in the north down to On Nut in the south. The only card I have come across which indicates whether the network is providing GPRS or EDGE is the Sierra Wireless 775, the Watcher software will display either GPRS or EDGE, in real time, next to the signal strength indicator. If you are using a GC83 then the only option is to measure the upload/download speed using http://www.dslreports.com/stest for example. On a good day EDGE will be three to four times faster than GPRS, under normal use expect two to three times faster.
