Punishments agreed for student acts

BANGKOK: The Education Ministry has completed a draft list of inappropriate student behaviour and suggested punishments which it put to student hearings in March, a senior ministry official said.

Students caught swearing could be sent to public speaking class and young patrons of adult entertainment venues to acting class.

Charuayporn Thoranin, deputy education permanent secretary, said the draft list contains 16 acts of inappropriate behaviour.

The list was agreed by the Social Development and Human Security Ministry, police and the Children and Youth Protection Department.

The list was is line with the Child Protection law which takes effect in March.

It will be revised after student hearings and sent to the cabinet, she said.

The acts classified as inappropriate are:

- visiting adult entertainment venues,

- gambling,

- rude gestures,

- going out after 10 pm without parents,

- visiting brothels,

- carrying weapons,

- brawling,

- extortion,

- stealing,

- dealing or using drugs,

- having sex

- and breaking school dress and hair codes.

Students would be subject to varying punishment.

``If they are caught visiting an adult entertainment venue, they'll be sent to an acting class. Those who love to curse and swear will be sent to a public speaking class,'' she said.

Students who deal in drugs, fight, or steal will be sent to boot camps or sent to do hard labour or community services.

Beauty salon operators will be asked not to provide certain services to students such as hair-dying and nail-painting.

For having sex? For males it's a forced "gender reassignment."

MOE : Somachai, you had a sex!

SC: Solly! I saw on western movie, it look like fun.

MOE: To rate, Somchai...whip it out and put on table.

SC: But, but...(panic goes through Somchai's body as he places his manhood on the desk).

MOE: Rerax, Somchai, this only take 10 seconds and you be cured for rest of life!

MOE: (Holding up Somchai's 'manhood' to the press) Now he cure! He never have a sex again. Happy day to Thailand.

What became of Somchai? He's now Somchalita. Last account he/she is now in acting school for being caught in a Pattaya ladyboy club. There is hope! (S)he'll become famous on a Thai TV (no pun intended) soap. As for the girl who was caught with Somchai? There will always be a part of Somchai on her. Yup, Ploy has now become, Boy.

Is it an appropriate act to answer your mobile phone while you're trying to drive a bike on which your 6 best friends are riding pilion ?

Have you noticed that there's nothing about drinking alcohol ?

what about the crime of endangering life with a motorcycle?

or riding on the pavement?

should they be sent to a driving school? or made to take walking classes?

Trouble is, there's so many first generation drivers in this country. Most of them didn't have parents, siblings, cousins, grandparents, etc to teach them anything about driving. Especially the basic concepts of courtesy and physics. (ie: Someone getting to a red light before you does not mean you are less of a man/ Foam-rubber flip-flops+pavement= footless and begging in the night bazzare).

I think that driver training (real traing, like 25+ hrs) should be manditory, otherwise the recklessness will become engrained.

Having only the offenders go to traffic school would require the police in Chang Mai to actuall make a traffic stop :o !

The "polite society" definitely ends at the pavement!
