My wife and I have been married for a while. We sent her passport off to have her maiden name changed to my last name. They sent the passport back with a line marked through her maiden last name and with a note to look at page 11. On page 11 is another photo, and her new signature. Also there is some text indicating that she is changing her name because she was married. It also includes the county and state where the marriage occurred.

She has flown with that passport with a ticket issued in her new married name. She has a green card by the way in the new married name as well.

Anyway, her passport expired, and we sent everything off for renewal. What we received was a brand new passport, with the old one attached to the back.

I would have thought that the new passport would have have been issued in her name married name, but it doesn't. There is no reference to the new married name in her renewed passport. I wonder if that's how it is supposed to be, or if someone made a mistake.

So, now I wanting to purchase a ticket for her, and I'm not sure if I should just make the ticket match the new passport(with her old maiden name) or use her new married name that is reflected on her green card and that is referenced in her old (attached) passport.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Ain't that a puzzler!!

I'd suggest asking your intended airline what they think, then ask a supervisor if you can get their recommendation in writing either via email or fax, with a contact email and tel #, just in case there's a hangup at check-in.

looks like a cock up by thai embassy,15years ago my wf.renewed her passport only for them to put someone else's photo in it,when the wf got intouch with them they wanted to charge her again, our consulate in cardiff sorted them out,so they still have not got any better.

She will check with the Thai embassy when she is in Thailand.

For now, on the one hand, it seems that if I buy her ticket using her maiden name, then it would match the current passport and I don't think it would cause anyone to ask any questions.

On the other hand, I kind of want to buy the ticket to match her green card and to align with the text about the name change in the attached "expired" passport. She will also take a copy of the marriage certificate.

Maybe it will work out either way.

I do like the suggestion about checking with the carrier, but I'm doubtful I would ever get them to even understand what I'm talking about. Also I need to buy this ticket pretty quickly.

It seems like just using her maiden name and matching her current passport might be the least friction. Everything I see says to make the ticket match the passport. So I'm thinking I might make it match even if I feel like the passport might be in error.

Also, the TSA wants a middle name now, which actually is her maiden name. To confuse the matter even more, I might just put her married last name as her middle name. So anyway you look at it, I'll have both names there, they'll just be in the wrong order.

These two words (names) and their order are causing me a lot of anxiety.

who was it that issued the passport?if i remember the last time the wf renewed her thai passport in the uk they told her they now send them to bkk.so i would get intouch and ask for a temporary one, just looking at my wfs old passports which has her married name on them, has she travelled useing her married name if so her name change would be on the computer that could cause a problem.

I'm not sure where the new one was issued but I think it was probably here in the US. The old one says "Passport Division Bangkok" and the new one says "Ministry of Foreign Affairs"

We met with Thai consulate representatives from Washington DC and they handled it. Weeks later and the new passport arrived.

I tried calling the the consulate in DC today a couple of times but I never got through.

looking at my wfs passports they send them to bkk[ministry of foreign affairs] and returned to the thai embassy in country of residence,it should say the holder previously travelled on pass. no ------------ issued by m.of f.a.at bangkok.it should be on the page next to her photo page 3.keep trying to get intouch with the consulate.

Has she changed her name in her house book and on ID card?

That is what the problem could be if the answer is no. I think the rule is that they issue the passport with the name shown on ID and house book.

If you got married in Thailand that would of been done already. If in the US she will need to register her marriage at the Amphoe.

No she has not changed the name in the house book or ID card.

So if you are correct, that could mean the passport we have is correct. That would be great news.

However, I still wouldn't really know which name to book the ticket under.

can you please answer these questions,

did she ever travel on the old passport,

if they have issued a new passport are there any observations, they should be on a page which also says endorsments,

Her passport is correct as far as the Thai government is concerned.

I would buy her ticket using the name shown in the passport.

While in Thailand I suggest you sort out her ID and house book issue. If you got married in the states and have time it would be good to try and have the marriage registered via the Thai embassy or a consulate, or at the least have the certificate certified by them.

To do here you would need to have marriage certificate translated to Thai and the translation certified by the Ministry of Foreign affairs (can be done by translator) before going to Amphoe.

Update:

I purchased the ticket in her married name as per an online chat with the carrier. On arriving at check-in she was asked to show her old passport with the name change information. After checking-in when going through security, I think she was also asked to show the old passport as well.

Regardless, she made it home.

And on the return flight, at least her ticket will match her green card.

I think the confusion stems from her Thai ID and House Card not being changed to her married name yet, even though the consolate made a notation in her old passport regarding the name change due to marriage.

I think she is going to try and get the Thai ID and House Card changed while on her visit.

Thanks for all the help and information.
