Krabi Recommendations - First Time Visiting

Can anyone recommend a good place to stay in Krabi and or surrounding islands? Only going to be there for about 4-days but have never been before and figured would spend a couple nights in Krabi and a couple nights on an island. Want to be by or on the beach. If available would like to visit a number of places beyond the beach to such as forest land / parks and would prefer to rent a motorbike to get around. Since I have never been there before would appreciate any recommendations or heads-up on anything. Price is not a huge issue but 1500 a night sounds reasonable (in my mind without ever being there before) but if 800 a night gets me near the same then great or if 2500 means the difference opening the front door right onto the beach that would be great too. Not going to be spending a lot of time inside but would like to feel secure in keeping valuables in the room.

Any advice would truly be appreciated. Thanks.

Not an island, but only accessible by boat, is Railay. Stunning setting, backed by cliffs.

There are a few photos at http://apostcardfrom...7/krabi-railay/

http://www.kohkwangseaview.com/ I spent a week there last month. Highly recommendable. Meets almost all your criteria. Give them a call

Ayg Thanks. I have really been focusing on Railay. Looks beautiful. Looks like there is one nice hotel that is very reasonable but it says it is on the east side near the dock and the beaches really are not for swimming there. I also read it is also only a couple minutes walk to the nice beaches. Do you know if this is true or convenient? Even on the west side I found a reasonable nice place but can see their bungalows and units go so far back they are almost on the east side. Just wondering if it makes a difference.

Any problem getting a boat here after around 5 or 6 in the evening? (see below)

Dancealot .. Thanks, thinks looks very nice and reasonable. Are there boats around there for easy access to Phi Phi?

Part of the problem is we get there about 4pm (Krabi Airport) on a Saturday and leave Wednesday about the same time. I want to spend time visiting the various islands including Phi Phi but I also want to spend time just lounging and walking the beach without spending hours traveling from place to place.

It is an odd problem but there are so many beautiful places there, I am having a hell of a time figuring out our itinerary. There are three of us (wife and adult daughter) and I was originally thinking of spending a couple nights on Phi Phi and a couple nights at a place like you guys mentioned. We are just going to bring some backpacks to make getting around easy but we still don't want to be lugging the stuff around and wasting time changing rooms otherwise I'd probably stay somewhere different every night.

Problem with staying on Phi Phi it all seems way over priced and the reviews I read of places are not that good. If it rains and we are stuck inside, I want to be somewhere fairly nice and I want a room with a safe to keep our stuff in while we are in the water.

I guess what I am asking is do you guys think it is a better idea to stay at one place such as your recommendations the entire trip and then spend a day going out to Phi Phi and coming back at night? It seems the right out there is close to 2-hours and just seems like it would really cut into the day going back and fourth but at least we will have been there and seen it because if the beaches closes to the mainland are just as nice, we can rent a boat ourselves and go closer places for the day.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If youŕe bringing your daughter along as well i'd recommend renting a car at the airport. Check AVIS krabi airport. They are very friendly and farang oriented(read no scams). Boats to phi phi or any other islands are planned and booked ahead. If you rent on the spot if youŕe unlucky you have to wait untill they book the boat full. Better book ahead 1day while you are on krabi. Youĺl have to go to on nang beach for the boat trips.

Good luck

Railay is a pretty small area. You're never more than a few minutes walk from anywhere else, so I wouldn't worry too much about the resort's actual location. I stayed at the Railay Beach Resort and was very satisfied. It's a bit nicer than some of the adjacent resorts (but nowhere near as nice as the Rayavadee - and nowhere near that price, either). The public boats stop around 6 p.m., but if you book a transfer from the airport to your resort you can get a boat even after dark. This is also a lot easier than haggling with taxi drivers and boatmen, then waiting for the boat to fill up.

One of the negatives about Railay is the food. Some of the restaurants are mediocre. However, in Krabi town there are some restaurants which do absolutely stunning seafood. It's probably worthwhile doing a day trip to Krabi. Also, alcohol in Railay is very expensive, so it's a good idea (if you drink) to pick up a bottle or two on the mainland.

I stayed at '"The Small Krabi" Ao Nang. Small boutique hotel with 2 pools and it is only a short walk to Ao Nang beach. Clean modern rooms booked on line about 1,200 a night B&B.

Thanks for all the replies. We ended up staying at one place in Railay called the Sunrise Tropical Resort. Was on the east side but great place with great food. It was a bit pricey but it seemed like the safest bet not being familiar with other places and going by recent reviews online.

We did take a day tour going to other places such as Phi Phi and snorkeling which was great but I absolutely LOVED Railay and the weather was great. Not sure how much I would like it in High Season but so glad we stayed there after visiting Phi Phi and seeing all the boats and people.

Got real lucky too as the weather was great every day and the only rain came when we were heading back to the airport. They told us it rained every day for almost a week before we got there.

You will love it there,

i have been going there since the early 2000 when i gave up on Krabi cause it was getting to touristy an expensive.

Suggestion, drive down , its abut 2 hours, ( cross 2 ferries) and than drive around and ask at different places. Each year it seems to grow and many new places I usually stay at Long beach but i have never been in high season so...

make sure u head to the town for meals, great seafood at Thai prices
