Getting To Vientiane Loas?

Featured Replies

Whats the easiest way to get to Vientiane Loas? What airlines fly there?

We took the first class sleeper train to Nong Khai from bkk then bussed across the boarder and a taxi into town from customs/immigratiion. Do not remember about Lao Visas on arrival though.

I just read that Loas is the same as Thailand with regards to giving a 30 day stamp on arrival. I will probably do the same. Do you remember how much sleeper train is? also can you reccomend a hotel near embassy?

You need a Visa to enter Laos.

It costs around 1,500 Baht depending on your nationality and can be got at the border.

You can fly Air Asia to Udon Thani and get a mini bus to the border.

Says 1st class sleeper is 1217 one way (private room 2 beds) Can not recommend Hotels as last time I made the trip was over 10 years ago and things change. Watch your possessions though as there were a lot of sticky fingers around. One guy even had his car stolen from Hotel we stayed in. Would not even trust hotel safe. Train option gave us a lot of room to take back all the goodies we bought on the way. Both the Market in Vientiane and in Nong Khai have some neat stuff.

Edit: There used to be direct flights from BKK to Vientiane which we flew on one year. But that was a connecting flight from Shanghai. Single ticket from BKK to Vientiane if still available probably expensive. If your rich and looking for easy flying direct is probably the easiest way to go.

Which is the reason most travel to Udon by air and then bus/van to border about 40 minutes away.

Airlines flying to Vientiane are Thai n Lao Aviation, expensive, return abround THB8,000.-

Airlines flying to Udon Thani , Thai, Nok Air n Air Asia. From Udon Thani airport it is a 40mintes van trip to border @ Nong Khai. Can be as cheap as THB1,800.-one way.

To Noing Khai , from Bangkok you can take Train fromHualampong, 2nd class sleeper around THB800.-one way, trains often late or VIP buses from Morchit Bus Terminal, around THB750.- one way.

You can always visit a travel agent and get your visa in advance. This is what I used to do. Never needed a picture though. If you take this route the travel agent can tell you what to bring. This is very easy as the travel agent "gophers" are the ones that go to and wait in line at the Lao Consulate.

I think Laos airlines flies there as well, or is that only Savanakhet?

My last direct flight to Vientiane was on Royal Air Lao Boeing 307 - food was a butter sandwich. It converted me into a train rider. Although crossing the Mekong by long tail boat during rainy season was also an adventure in itself.
