Eight Thais jailed in Myanmar for weapons

The Nation on Sunday

RANONG: -- The head of the Township Border Committee in Ranong yesterday confirmed the Myanmar court's sentencing of eight Thais to seven years imprisonment each for carrying war weapons, while the verdict on two Thais facing drug charges would be announced later this month.

As the eight were among 92 Thais sentenced to a three-and-a-half-year jail terms for encroaching on Myanmar forestland and illegal entry, they would each serve over a decade in total.

Colonel Pornsak Pulsawat, also commander of the 25th Infantry Regiment Task Force, said the weapons convicts were Somchai Saothee, 45, Pinit Arun, 49, Seksan Wongkasa, 40, Sa-nguan Kladsaeng, Somporn Kladsaeng, 29, Winai Siriwat, 53, Khamthawee (last name unknown), 52, and Nipon Thippakdee, 60.

Khamthawee was facing a drug charge along with Kalaya Thavo, 49. The court verdict would be announced in late August. Pornsak said Myanmar officials had submitted to the central government details of a request for pardons for the remaining 83 Thais.

This area has been a hub for illegal activities for decades.

Practicably without any border control on Myanmar side Thais have encroached Myanmar territory in the Ranong area, for as long as i entered Thailand back in the 90 s

Saw mills, prostitution, drugs, human trafficking and last but not least the phishing industries slavery policies towards the Burmese.

As Myanmar steps up its commitment to be part of ASEAN and the AEC ,times and dices are changing.

Its about time!!

Up in the area where they were caught, it's a river that can be easily crossed.

Often there is not even a river to be crossed along most borders. The locals knew where they were, and I am sure that sentencing was severe in no small part to Chalerms public criticism of Myanmar over drugs issues and also of the leader of the Karen Army, regardless of being leader of the KNLA when it comes to drugs, the KNLA and the Junta are all big buddies making big money. I guess Chalerm needs to make an equally public apology...chances of that happening....?

I know Jim, but I am familiar with the area. My wife's son in law lives in that area. About 40 km from here.

Hopefully have no weak judges there that can be bought off like the weak judges here.

Its pretty bad when Judges can be bought off fpr a song and dance. It shows they have absolutely no respect for the Law they uphold, and no

respect for themselves.

Sweet. Any Thai on the Burmese side of the border, without entry documents, is up to no good. Especially the ones carrying weapons. Since crime and punishment is virtually unheard of in Thailand, this may send a message to the Thais. There is a limit to what you can get away with. Outstanding work on the part of the Burmese authorities. The Thais have been locking up the Burmese for decades now, so fair is fair, right?
