I suppose that attackers were trying to scare someone inside the prison on remand. Maybe that person will be less likely to spill the beans on the rest of the gang. Great fun though almost wild west stuff is this.

It's not mentioned in the article, but if they came from the Param 6 contingent that is based in Cha'am, believe me when I say that they mean business!

Authorities Shaken By Shootings Involving Pattaya Prison

PATTAYA:--Security at the Pattaya Remand Prison has been heightened in the aftermath of a recent assault on a prison compound. Gunmen used an M16 Rifle to shoot into the prison and wounded an inmate before escaping.

PATTAYA – August 28, 2012 [PDN]: Two separate shootings involving the prison in Pattaya are apparently not related, police said at a 9 a.m. press conference.

On August 26 at 1:30 a.m., an unknown gunman or gunmen fired more than 30 rounds from an M16 Rifle into the Pattaya Remand Prison in Banglamung. An inmate was injured, and the exterior walls of the prison were damaged by the bullets.

On July 19, the home of a warden at the Pattaya prison was also fired upon with a similar weapon. The warden has since transferred to a Bangkok prison.

Security has been beefed up in the aftermath of the prison assault, said Mr.Somchai Wimansak, the commander of the Pattaya special prison.

He made the announcement after several meetings with police that were closed to the media. He confirmed that an M16 Rifle had been used in the daring attack on the prison.

Later the same day at 3:30 p.m., police officials met privately again for an hour at the Banglamung police station, attended by Pol. Col. Pisit Proyrungroj, vice commissioner of Chonburi provincial police; Mr. Somchai Wamansak; Pol.Jackrin Tuansuparp, the vice director police detective department; and related police officers.

After the meeting, Pol. Col. Pisit Proyrungroj said police still could not disclose in detail the motives for the prison assault.

Their investigation also revealed that in the prison shooting, the trajectory of the bullets indicated that most of the shots were fired in the air as a threatening gesture.

One arrested following shooting incident at Pattaya Remand Prison

PATTAYA:--Police have arrested one man living close to the Pattaya Remand Prison following an incident outside the prison which reportedly left one prison inmate slightly injured after the suspect is accused of using an HK Assault Rifle to fire shots at the prison wall.

The incident is shrouded in secrecy with all sides trying to withhold information from journalists who are trying to report on the events which led to the shooting. Since the early hours of Sunday security at the Prison has been increased with Special Armed Officers from the Prison Service deployed there. A meeting at Banglamung Police Station occurred on Tuesday afternoon, chaired by the Prison Governor Khun Somshai and Police Colonel Pisit, Deputy Commander of Chonburi Provincial Police to discuss the incident and early on Wednesday Morning the arrest of Khun Jirawat aged 21 took place and the seizure of an HK Assault Rifle was made.

The suspect confessed to working alone and claimed he was promised the sum of 10,000 Baht by a Thai inmate known as “Dave” who wanted to scare a fellow prisoner who had not paid for drugs previously ordered from him. Khun Jirawat was sent to Bowin sub-district in Sriracha where the gun and bullets were left in a bag next to a street sign. He was told at which part of the prison wall to fire at, close to the Male cell-block. It is believed the injuries to an unnamed inmate were caused not by the bullets but by falling cement from the wall

Armed Attack on Pattaya Prison may be solved quickly

By tommydee

PATTAYA: -- An armed attack on Pattaya’s remand prison with at least one M16 rifle, as Pattaya 103 FM posted almost exclusively on Tuesday, has made local headlines today as officials held a public and press conference to discuss various possible motives.

The unknown gunman or men ( depending on the version given) are said to have fired in excess of 30 rounds at the remand Prison, which is located several miles outside the city in the Banglamung region.

Motive and identity remains unknown and whilst various concepts are being offered as possibilities, little is being released into the public domain. That, however, is not an indication that authorities are at a loss as, in the past, we have seen that Police are wise enough not share all their knowledge with the public, but rather to do what they do best, which is to work the case professionally and come up with the culprits quickly.

Two men confess to attacks on prison, warden

THE NATION

PATTAYA: -- Chon Buri police yesterday arrested two men and seized a rifle and ammunition in connection with three separate attacks this year, on the home of a prison warden and on Pattaya Remand Prison.

Police raided a house in Chon Buri's Bang Lamung district and nabbed Jirawat Suasing, 25 and Charin Jainart, 22, at about 8am.

Found in the house were an HK33 rifle with 120 rounds of ammunition and a home-made hand grenade.

The suspects are alleged to have used war weapons to attack the home of Wuttipan Krajuikrajai, a warden at Pattaya Remand Prison, on July 19. Wuttipan was at home at the time of attack but was not injured. Police found six M-16 cartridges in front of his house, which close to the prison.

The suspects were also being sought in connection with an attack on the same house on August 12, when a grenade was thrown into the property. The blast destroyed part of the house and killed two pet birds. Two weeks later attackers opened fire at the prison, wounding one inmate.

Police said both suspects said they were hired by an inmate in Chon Buri Central Prison, identified only as "Dev", whose drug business in Pattaya Remand Prison had been affected by Wuttipun's crackdown.

Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, meanwhile, said the attacks proved that drug dealers, had a network to hire outsiders to work on their behalf.

He said human rights organisations, therefore, should not attack his idea that drug convicts sentenced to death be executed within 15 days. The existing law states that an inmate has 60 days to appeal after getting a death sentence.

Don't like the sound of this at all blink.png

Let's hope that HR organisations continue to protest and the Thai judical system is dragged, kicking and screaming probably, into the 21st century. Having the death sentence is bad enough, but 15 days !!! ermm.gif

That's strange, judging from previous news reports I was of the impression that convicts that received the death sentence were freed the next day, especially if it concerned serial murders.
