webfact
Chalerm: ASEAN to get aggressive on drug eradication BANGKOK, 1 September 2012 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung has expressed his belief that the problem of narcotic drugs in the ASEAN region will ease off if drug smuggling from Myanmar’s Thachilek province is prevented. Mr. Chalerm on Friday chaired an ASEAN ministerial meeting against illicit drugs at the Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok. He said the meeting had the objective to express ASEAN’s intention to declare drug eradication a regional agenda within the year 2015. The Thai and Cambodian governments have together been pushing for the ASEAN Declaration on a Drug-Free ASEAN since the 20th ASEAN Summit in Cambodia in April. The Deputy Prime Minister said ASEAN had been strongly fighting against drugs for the past 14 years but the problem had also been worsening. He also remarked that the problem would get better if drug trafficking at Thachilek was dealt with. China, Myanmar and Thailand have jointly set up a checkpoint on the banks of the Mekong River to intercept drug smuggling along the borders. -- NNT 2012-09-

So it is those nasty Burmese that are the problem then. Guess they should pack up thier Golden Triangle and go home.

I'm sure during the ASEAN Kickoff year of 2015 ASEAN politicians will utter a ton of sound bites...of course sound bites for the media and declaring an objective with teeth are miles apart.

hanuman2543
They produce and sell only what is very high on the wishlist of many Thais (to get high or get rich). Reminds me of the same problem between Mexico and the US.

Spalpeen
I remember when Thaksin promised to completely eradicate drugs from Thailand within one year. How did that work out?
KireB
The only 2 ways to eradicate illegal drugs is either to legalize it or focus on the demand side of the problem. Chalerm chooses to focus on the supply side! How clever, the more you go after the supply, the more expensive the drugs become and the more problems you create for society!

laislica
Reasons to get rid of illegal drugs. The government get no revenue. No taxes paid. It would make more sense to legalese them but that would finish off the drug cartels in one stroke. Who want's these drugs to be illegal, why the very people making vast sums of money from it. Dap
90 days? He's only got 18 days left (of the 90) to "Rid the Tourism Industry of the Mafia". By my calculations, September 19th should be the award ceremony. As usual, I wait to see.

mrtoad
Must have had pretty sore ears over the last few days, as he's clearly been talking too much of his medicine again. Of course, if Chalerm was in charge if ASEAN he would have this sorted very quickly, is he now angling for a more international posting?
