Breath of fresh air. This is the guy who claimed in an interview that the role of governor is merely a facillitating one, however as time went on he orgestrated crackdowns for example on nightlife of any kind.

He was one of the longest serving governors in Thailand, so him being reshuffled away was long overdo. I predicted this a while ago.

Phew!!!!

(It's in the Nation too, but they feel the need to give it their own tired political spin)

Why do you feel the need to snipe at The Nation and call it "boring political spin"?

As this is an *INACTIVE* post as reported here:

And as its a documented fact that Chalerm pledged to remove him as part of his 2011 election campaign, which part of the nation article exactly, constitutes "spin"?

I know you are a red-shirt apologist, but come on, do you seriously think this transfer was not 100% politically motivated???

And remember the saying, "Better the Devil you know, than the Devil you don't"...

This "Breath of fresh air", is more like a big cause for concern. Let's see what new red-shirt Devil gets inserted by this government.

The way I see it, I'd much rather have an governor who's biggest "crime" is attempting to enforce legal closing times on drinking establishments. Without the proper backing of the current government and police force, how successful could he ever really be in that endeavor?

Now we are probably getting a new redshirt Devil. No telling what stupidity he is likely to pull, WITH full support of the government and police. The early closing times are no where near as bad as the curfews we suffered last time the redshirts rode roughshod over town. At least the now ex-governor kept the redshirts mostly in check, which is much more than we can probably say for the incoming guy.

Are the red shirts going t leave the bars open all night (there home away from home) and are they going to close down the major malls while they burn up fire engines?whistling.gif

I have heard that the local red authorities - PAO, municipality - wanted ML Pannada (Democrat) in place as they didn't want to split the power with a BKK-appointed red (PT)...They would rather have a compromising and moderate yellow than a powerful PT in place. Quite interesting. So don't know how the new dynamics will pan out...

All appointments in Thailand are *always* politically motivated; it was politically motivated when he was appointed, and now it is politically motivated to move him away (after being one of the longest serving governors and one off the remaining few who haven't been replaced by the current government)

Gripe with the Nation is that they are completely out of touch with goings on outside Bangkok and don't have anything better to write than the stuff from when he was appointed YEARS ago he made a claim to not be lenient on red shirt protesters; makes it sound like nothing else has happened since, that there aren't other issues, and generally shows the tired vibe of seeing a red shirt behind every tree. As it transpired, Red Shirts in Chiang Mai weren't inconvenienced by him in any way. It's beside the point broken-record reporting.

I find the discussion of the replacement of Gov. Panadda interesting in relation to the Red/Yellow political factors, but those

are issues that the Thai people will ultimately deal with themselves.

.

I have no idea what his impact was on the bars in town was or really care if he wanted them open all night or

only according to the legal hours.

However I can attest to the fact that on several ocassions while attending public events here the Governor went

out of his way to personally thank us for attending. There were never many farang at these events so his interest in approaching

us seemed to be very sincere and gracious. He is the only Thai official I've ever encountered who treated us as anything

more than a necessary nuisance. I have no idea what kind of a shirt the next Governor will be wearing but I know we'll

miss the current man.
