The wife and I (both UK Expats) fancy a trip to Lombok. We have (rather poor) health insurance from BUPA but we'd like to get travel insurance for the trip. Our UK broker says he can't arrange anything from the UK, and we've got no idea where to go to find something here. Anyone got any suggestions about where we can find a reasonably priced travel insurance package?

We use Columbus online, if you live in Thailand for 3 months then Columbus is worth considering

You use your Thai address...We have multi trip annual travel insurance, and I think we pay around GBP160 covering my wife and I

Age is the important factor here, you will always find something up to 65 then it gets rather more difficult as the year pass by.

Try HCC Medical Insurance Services. Their policy is for medical insurance only (a throw-away $250 baggage insurance, which could be its disadvantage) and has no delay or cancelled plans due to ill-health insurance. For that reason it is quite cheap. For me I like to insure only the things I could not easily afford - I can afford to pay again for a canceled holiday but a major medical trauma and repatriation would make a dent in my finances.

I found HCC easy to use for my Thai wife and my non-British citizen daughter when I needed to demonstrate insurance to get a German Schengen visa for the Thai parts of the family earlier this year.

I was impressed with their service. An airline lost a bag - didn't even know there was baggage insurance until I was about to throw the policy away. Their customer services help-line was instant response and very customer-focussed - very unusual for a US-based company. E.G they volunteered that maybe I should make two claims under both policies even though only one bag was lost. (I did not as my non-Brit daughter lost nothing but their attempts to maximise my pay out were welcomed). Everything, even when it comes to claims, can be done by phone and e-mail. Within a week of sending them the airline's e-mail which only indirectly admitted that the bag was not traceable my wife received the $250 cheque in the mail. Seems like they are set up to handle international business from whichever source.

The only downside is that the cheapskate German low cost carrier (subsidiary of a big German airline) who took us from Stanstead to Koln and lost a bag, having procrastinated for months about the claim, are now seeking to avoid any liability themselves, because I had baggage insurance with a third party (at an amount very much smaller than the IATA guideline for claim limits). I expect to win when I start my letter writing campaign to chairmen, travel magazines and regulators BTW!

Thanks, guys. Your time and advice is much appreciated. I will check this forum again in a few days, but also thanks in advance for any other suggestions.
