BANGKOK (AFP) - A Thai massage parlor king turned politician has been kicked out of parliament, after the Constitutional Court ruled he had failed to comply with election law.

Chuwit Kamolvisit won a seat with the Chart Thai party in last year's general election, but the court ruled Thursday he had not been a member of the party for long enough to run for office.

The politician, who made a fortune peddling sleaze but reinvented himself as a champion against corruption, had started his own party but merged with Chart Thai shortly before the February 2005 polls.

The court ruled he had only been a Chart Thai member for one day before the election, not the 90 days required by law. The party must now name someone to replace him.

Chuwit, who had campaigned heavily to show his drive against corruption, said he had no regrets and declined to speculate on his political future.

"I have to study the Constitutional Court's ruling. But I shall return," he told reporters.

In the meantime, Chuwit said he plans to complete a masters degree in political science.

Ah Chuwit.... now there's a real love-hate relationship for farangs like me. First he was a massage parlor king--loved him. Then he was the head thug responsible for the overnight destruction of the lovely beer bar complex at Sukhumvit soi 10--hated him very much. Then he turned to politics and dared to join a non-TRT party, and even make amends, slightly, for the soi 10 destruction by funding the now-completed, and fairly pleasant, Chuvit Garden--liked him again a little. Then he joins forces to fight corruption with a real Thai heroine, Khunying Jaruwan Maintaka, the chief auditor who was doing her job much too well of exposing corruption by the Thai guys , so she was ousted by the corrupt politicians whose livelihood she was threatening--like him again a lot. Is it any wonder or coincidence that, like Jaruwan, Chuwit has been kicked out of office?

MR. CHUWIT HAS BEEN DISQUALIFIED FROM THE MP POST.

The Constitutional Court judges voted 9 to 5 to disqualify Mr. Chuwit Kamolwisit (ชูวิทย์ กมลวิศิษฎ์) from an MP post, as he had become a Chart Thai party member for less than 90 days prior to the election application.

The ruling came after 118 Thai Rak Thai party MPs had filed a petition with the Constitutional Court asking it to disqualify Mr. Chuwit from the Chart Thai Party's party-list MP. They said that Mr. Chuwit’s Tontrakulthai (ต้นตระกูลไทย) party was dissolved and that he joined the Chart Thai Party on January 6, 2005. They said that Mr. Chuwit, therefore, did not meet the 90-day membership requirement. However, Mr. Chuwit is considered the Chart Thai member since that day.

Secretary-general of the Constitutional Court, Paiboon Warahapaiboon (ไพบูลย์ วราหะไพฑูรย์) said that the judges agreed with the petition, as Mr. Chuwit became the Chart Thai member only one day before the election application. Therefore, Mr. Chuwit did not meet the qualifications and must be disqualified from the MP post.

A by-election to replace Mr. Chuwit will not be necessary as the next candidate on the Chart-Thai Party’s list, Mr. Kasem Sorajakkasem (เกษม สรศักดิ์เกษม), will automatically move up to fill the post. Meanwhile, Mr. Chuwit said that he accepted the court’s decision, adding that he just felt sorry that he will not have a position to work for the society.

It's ironic that many of Thaksin's opponents are gentlemen of dubious backgrounds themselves. Chuwit, Sondhi, Sanoh of Sa Kaeo etc etc. Are they opposing the PM because he refused to give them a slice of the pie? Or is Thaksinism too much even for their already corrupted minds to take? Who knows? When are we going to have some more clean knights in shining armour, like Khunying Jaruwan and Khunying Sirporn? Or is it just down to the women to fight the good fight?

Come on ! Even if everybody has the right to amend and to change... This guy is a "walking disgrace" !

Critisize the crooks (AKA the gvt) doesn't make you an honest guy.

Chuwit, as an elected PM last august, was even DENIED a visa to go to USA ! He must have a real long trailer of scandals behind him...

His election is not the proof that the thai democratic system is working well : on the contrary it's a disgrace.

I've never said he was an honest guy. I still think he has a little more credibility than many that are now in power.

Wasn't he going to the U.S. in order to find out more about the *cough* CTX scanner scandal when that visa was denied?
