Permanent Residence

Featured Replies

Hi all

Just been offered permanent residence on Thailand. What are the advantages?? I have a daughter here so the price is 95,000baht. My only hang up is that I work for a company that is BOI accredited, so i get the 2 year WP and 2 year Visa. so what are the benefits of having perm residence in my situation?

for interest which year did you make your application and presume you weighed the pros and cons of PR when you made your initial application..

One would assume that the is the way it happens, unless an under the table deal

no not applied yet, sorry when i say been offered perm residence, i meant i now fit the criteria to apply.

I heard there has been no PR's processed since the coup in 2006.

If it is possible, what is the criteria ?

Regards

S

Thanks OP.. All is clear. I had a continual work permit with same company for 7 years when I applied but wanted to apply because I had the means and qualified so why not. I personally felt that as I had really settled in Thailand the PR would give me a feeling of security and it removes some of the time consuming things associated with a visa extension.

The actual benefits are well documented if you google benefits of PR. Now I am retired people ask the question why I continue with the 2006 application which started before retirement when I have a retirement visa anyway.

I guess its my choice to spend or not to spend the 95K Baht and I choose to do so if ever the Interior Minister gets round to signing the approvals

I just feel its a more permanent way to stay here long term. Maybe its a psycological thing with me. Many may disagree but that is also their choice.

Only you can decide that which suits your situation and as you are married you get PR at half price anyway.

Firstly, I'd suggest you take a look at Camerata's excellent thread on this topic. While lengthy it contains pretty much everything you need to know, crtieria, opinions as to benfits/otherwise of PR etc..

My personal opinion:

The only real benefit is that if you lose your job/want to quit your job, you can remain in Thailand for as long as you like with no need to have any dealings with immigration, prove income, etc. etc. As I understand it, if your extension to stay is linked to a job/wp, when you lose that job you have to leave the country the same day!

There are a few other 'technical' benefits , but to me the one above is the only big one.

Be aware though, that as was mentioned above no applications have been approved (or rejected!) since the coup in 2006, and somewhere (apparently in the interior ministry) there is an ever increasing pile of applications (including mine) just gathering dust.

While we are periodically re-assured that someday this block will clear, the longer it goes on would appear to me to make this less and less likely.

I guess if applications are excepted again this December, that may point to some attempt to get the process back working.

Good luck if you decide to apply. I hope you have a lot of patience.

Anybody else get the feeling they don't really want us here? . . . permanently, semi-permanently or otherwise . . .

Thanks for the replies. The only reason that I would want it is for the same reason as Laceman, a feeling of security. I was unaware of the long wait everyone is having. I think I might just wait a while to see if the 'queue' goes down. im in no rush but would like it eventually.

Security?

replace the 'us' with 'me', and perhaps the statement might be more accurate?

Security = the idea that when Permanent Residence status is granted, you don't have to keep doing all the extensions, visa runs etc etc and (in theory) are granted most of the same rights and priveleges as a Thai and therefore can't be kicked out quite so easily.

Yeah, you might be right lol cheesy.gif

security that you can be here with few restrictions.

My view is if you are eligible, and have an inkling of wanting it, then apply.

Seen too many friends say 'don't need it yet' etc, then life takes an unexpected turn (lose jobs etc) and then find themselves up poo creek residency wise, and in the worst case, the clock re-setting as their 3 year non-continuous stay gets broken up.

Agree . . . if you are eligible and can afford it, it's something worth having if you're planning on being here a while. Don't know too many people that have actually got it tho . . .

What are the criteria. Can you get it if you've retired here but have never worked here?

No, you must be working in Thailand and paying tax.

If you fit the requirements for PR and have a Thai wife or child, then you fit the requirements for Thai citizenship (humanitarian reasons).

So why not just apply directly for citizenship, it's a lot cheaper than PR.

For me the main advantage of PR is security of stay.

Anyone's circumstances may change - for example if you are on a Marriage Visa and you break up, if you are on a Retirement Visa and the financial requirements change (required amount of money in the Bank or monthly Pension income) which they have in the past, you may be ineligible for an extension; with PR I do not have that concern.

Can you buy property after u get the permanent resident?

Sent from my XT910 using Thaivisa Connect App

You can always buy property - it is land foreigners can not own. Believe for land ownership you need citizenship.

Ok so how do you apply please?

Pick up an application at the Special Branch office on the grounds of Royal Thai Police Headquarters (Rama I Road, roughly across from Siam Paragon).

The basic requirement for getting Thai citizenship based upon marriage to a Thai is to be on continuous extensions for 3 years and can show 3 years of income of 40K per month from working in the country (work permit required of course).

That sounds easy . . . know any Thai ladies that want to get married so I can get the Thai citizenship rather that waiting for years for PR? cheesy.gif
