I sat in a bar/restaurant in khaosan recently and estimated, based on count over time, that the lady across the street with the padthai cart would probably take 9000 baht for the day. Considering her low overheads, she's probably making more profit than most bar owners.

1. The right to walk down a street without being lynched

And I personally agree that spouses of Thai nationals should have those rights too. But that is an immigration question, not a question of race. At present, Thailand discriminates against everyone non-thai equally.

I'm lucky, surrounded by Thai farmers that never went to high-school, that fall over drunk every night.

Five years on the farm, surrounded by that lot, I'm surprised I still have the ability to use a computer.

*ahem* Well, I don't know if this is going to get filtered through the white-noise of what's practically turned into a racial debate, BUT:

All through my uni days I worked in the hospitality industry. It's not just owners of bars in Thailand that have the issues that have been detailed in this thread...

Every single manager I worked with was an alcoholic, bar one. Hospitality seems to have a habit of sucking the souls from those without a very specific mind-set and realistic goals. Even working as a bartender is draining. If you don't have a very calm demeanour to start with, it is extremely taxing to deal with customers day in/ day out. You literally see the worst of people every day, as alcohol has a habit of not only releasing inhibitions, but magnifying people's negative traits to an extreme degree. The real successes are the owners who have event and floor managers, who run every aspect of the business. They also tend to be the most snarky, because they remove themselves from the environment and storm in every couple of months when the turnover's been a bit light, and wonder why it's going south.

Unless you are prepared to operate under 18 hours a day conditions, or have trusted staff who can operate the business independently from you, running a bar or restaurant is bad news, NO MATTER WHAT COUNTRY YOU RUN IT IN.
