I used to have all my data backed up online when I lived in the UK, but non of the services seem to work from here because the international connection is too slow. Does anyone know of a reliable online backup system that works from Thailand? I used to use ibackup.com. I want a solution that does continuous backup. I currently back up to disk once a week at the moment, but would prefer an online solution. The security of the backup isn't really an issue.

You mean like a cloud service such as Dropbox, Google Drive, Box.net, Skydrive, Sugarsync etc? I have success with Dropbox and Sugarsync, haven't tried others much.

I don't think dropbox has continuous back though. I's like a solution where everything is backed up automatically. I'll have a look at Sugarsync though.

Just buy a synology NAS - Thailand internet sucks for cloud backups.

Synology NAS is overkill for what I need. At the moment I back data onto a flashdrive. But I want to back up all my music as well, and don't at the moment. So no point spending hundreds of $s. Just need something simple and cheap that I can set and forget.

I agree about cloud backups here. I used to use ibackup and it backed everything up fine, but when my laptop crashed I couldn't get anything back because it was too slow. I contacted ibackup and they looked into it and said that the problem was that I was in Thailand and their service was no good to me here. So I need something that will actually work if I need to get my data back.

What's wrong with simple external usb hard-drives?

I have 2 and use rsync on a cron job. I'm sure windows and mac have software that'll do something similar...

USB hard drives are great, and is what i currently use. I personally prefer cloud storage though, so that's why I'm looking for an online solution that works in Thailand. It just seems a much neater and easier solution for my situation. And the back-up is well away from the laptop. With a USB drive, the laptop and drive could easily get lost/stolen/destroyed together. I know I could keep them in different places, but that's just too much hassle for me. idrive worked perfectly in the UK, so just wish there was something similar here.

I suppose it really depends also on how much Data there is ? as different options will be determined by volume.

That's very true. What I need is a cloud storage solution that work in Thailand. Currently trying out SugarSync.

What kind of internet connection do you have? I ask because whether the cloud provider is abroad or in Thailand, the main bottleneck is going to be your uplink speed which in the case of ADSL is either 512 or 1024Kbps. Backing up any kind of volume with that is a bit hopeless. If you have one of the high speed solutions like DOCSIS or FTTH that will be better but the coverage areas where those solutions are available is still patchy.

I have a Buddy 5Mb connection. I would get 10MB, but the 5MB is so slow that even getting 20Mb would mean it was slow. But the problem I had with ibackup wasn't backing up, but downloading. My laptop packed up and I got a new one but couldn't download any file over a few Mb because the download kept stopping and restarting because it was taking too long. e.g 4 hours to download a 10Mb file. The guys from iback did a thorough check and proved to me that the problem was me being in Thailand. With Buddy, most overseas websites seem pretty slow. But I'm only staying here another 6 months so no point changing. I'll get something better next time.

So I suppose what would be ideal would be a cloud backup bases in Thailand. If there's not one I'l; stick with my USB drives for now.

There is definitely something wrong with either your ADSL connection or the cloud provider you were using. I have a 12Mbps TRUE line and a TOT 8Mbps. With either of those I can download 20MB in less than a minute from many offshore servers. If I'm downloading from a filehost like Rapidshare with the TRUE connection I can consistently get more than 5GB/hour.

Another issue could be whether you are using a downloading utility that supports resume so that if the connection is broken, you don't need to start again.

I could do that with True at my last condo as well. I haven't had much luck with Buddy customer service, so I'll just change when I move. I can't be bothered with the hassle of trying to get them to look into it. It's just a waste of my time. The internet works fine for most things I need it for. It's faster during daytime than evening, but even their website says this is the case, so I can't see them doing anything about it. I just won't use them again. And I'll make sure next condo building has True available.

It must be your internet access. No problems with Dropbox or Sugarsyncin Thailand with data backup / sync daily and I am on a 7mbps basic ADSL account.

I'm testing SugarSync at the moment, so that may be what I end up with.

I have found what seems to be a very good online (cloud) backup and synchronization service with 15GB of free storage or 20GB if you use my link. The site works the way I want and not the way the others dictate as per Dropbox, Sky-Drive etc. You may well ask why I like this app over the other offerings. That is simple. The beauty of this app is that in order to back up and synchronize a file or folder all that is required is to place a SHORTCUT to the file/folder in the 'Copy' directory. Everything else is automatic; when you update and save the local file the online 'Copy' is automatically updated due to the shortcut. If you use Dropbox or Sky-Drive you are required to have the original in their directory.

IMPORTANT: If you are going to use my recommendation then please use the following referral link which will give you and I an extra 5 GByte of lifetime storage completely free of charge i.e. you will have an initial 20GByte of storage. The referral site is:-

Now to the installation procedure:-

To get your extra free 5GByte of storage, and help me with my 5GByte referral bonus, you must install their app which makes a 'Copy' folder on your hard drive. This is similar to the Dropbox & Sky-Drive procedure. During the installation you may be asked to permit the Copy application to change your firewall settings. Don't worry, the Copy app will add an exception to the firewall status to permit connections to your PC at anytime; it does not open a port. By the way, the Chrome browser may or may not throw up a malicious malware/site warning. This depends on the status of the liaison between Google and Barracuda Networks, who are the providers of Copy. Again you can ignore the warning. Barracuda Networks have been in the web security business for many years and now they are branching out hence the generous initial storage and referral bonus strategy. Their business plan seems to be to go after the corporations and use the individual as a freebie for publicity and a sounding board. Apologies for that digression but I do have my salesman hat on. After installing the app go to your email and reply to the email address confirmation Copy will have sent you. That's all..........

and you now have 20GByte of storage and I will have received an additional 5 GByte.

How about this as the belt n braces of a backup/synchronization system. If you accidentally delete the original from your hard drive, whilst logged in, the 'Copy' will be gone as well. However, there is no need to panic. The real beaut of this system: if you delete a file from your 'Copy' sync'ed directory it is deleted from the on-line copy but it is AUTOMATICALLY placed in the on-line Copy Recycle Bin. Is that bril or what? You really have to try very hard to mess up this system.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Interesting, and comes from Barracuda, who are quite well known in the Information Security field.

I might just grant you your 5Gb and have a look.

Cheers for the heads up.
