Hi Phil,

It is usually a simple task, but you obviously need access to a disk.

You are welcome to visit me, and I'll put it on for you.

PM me for directions if you are interested.

Fortunately it's one of the easiest things to install.

Once you get to actually obtaining and running the installer CD that is.. After that it's easy.

I'd be happy to do it for you at any location where there's beer.

Just in case someone else is interested, let me summarize the process.

1. To install any operating system (also Windows, etc.) you need to make the computer start up from the install CD (or DVD, or USB stick). As Ubuntu is typically downloaded over the internet, the first challenge is to actually get to a CD that you can install from. That means downloading the install CD image (a file ending in .ISO) and then burning the ISO file to an empty CD.

2. Now you need to start your computer and make it start up NOT from whatever is on the harddisk currently (Windows perhaps), but make it start from the CD. Some computers will show a message and give you the option when it sees that an install CD is in the drive, it'll ask something like 'Boot from CD?' or 'Press any key to boot from CD'. If that doesn't happen then you need to hit a particular key (varies per computer brand, often a function key like F12) to indicate that you want to boot from CD.

3. After this it's plain sailing. In the case of Ubuntu it'll actually start the entire system from the CD, meaning you have a fully functional environment where you can even start your web browser and surf the net all while it's installing. To install just double-click the icon that says 'Install'. For the actual installation it couldn't be easier, all you need to do is select a username for yourself and confirm the date and time and time zone. And you need to decide if you want to keep Windows on the computer at the same time so you can choose which system to start when you turn on the computer. If Windows is found on the computer it'll ask what you want to do.

Years ago I tried many flavors of Linux & liked it but,

At the time there were many problems dealing with business documents

like password protected excel files that were sent to me.

Also things like setting up a connection to wireless printers etc were not easy if possible at all.

USB devices & recognition was also a problem.

Can anyone comment about these things today? Have these things all been sorted now?

If so I will give it a try. I dont mind doing a dual boot setup.

Hardware support has improved considerably, to the point where it's actually easier to find and set up a printer on Ubuntu compared to Windows. There is no iTunes so getting music and other stuff on and off an iPhone is a bit harder. The main weakness remains MS Office. There is nothing as good as Outlook, especially if you need to smoothly connect to an MS Exchange server for your mail and calendar. File compatibility through LibreOffice is so-so for business documents with some formatting to them. There has been some improvement but it's not at a stage where I can confidently collaborate with people who are using Office 2007/2010. Interestingly there is a company called Kingsoft which has an office suite (for Windows and Android) that is an insanely accurate copy of office, really uncanny, and file compatibility is very good too. Sadly though they haven't made it available for Linux, but it's a stellar Office replacement on Windows or Android. An area where there is distinct improvement is in gaming; not that it's close to Windows, but there is a lot of postive movement there.

A good place to keep track of new developments in Ubuntu is http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk A really nice site, and interesting to see what's going on these days in Ubuntu and Linux as a whole.
