Subway System In Chiang Mai

Featured Replies

Has anyone heard of plans for a subway system in Chiang Mai? I heard the city was going to start on either Chang Klan Road or Thapae Road.

The rumour surfaces every few years, it's <deleted>.

last one I heard was a link road from the end of Nimmen to the airport.

Is it just slow news month, so they make up some drama?....as you say more than likely <deleted>.

incidently, they have a link from nimmen to the airport...but you just have to go past the area 51 gate? why spend more millions and months doing it 100m up the road.

sorry off topic, but I tried to relate it.

Almost 20 years ago I saw a plan which showed the first segment of the proposed subway (at that time) to run from the train station, west under the river, and continuing northwest toward the Kwang Sing intersection [which is Highways 107 and 11].

Don't hold your breath.

It would solve the above ground flooding problems!

Hope that a lot of people aren't frustrated by Googling "Area 51" in Chiang Mai! laugh.png

I thought Chiang Mai had a high water table level. Not that it would make a difference if the job was done proper.

A subway in CM??55555555 they can't even get a decent bus system going here.

With the state of the roads around the moat they would be better off having it there, they could dig down with a fork!whistling.gif

I have heard that the new F1 circuit will be underground and will be run at night perhaps the two are linked?

An underground F1 circuit, how logical, and run at night too, comes second only to the underwater grand prix for formula cars fitted with snorkels!

did you misread the plan..............it could be referring to the Subway; a new sandwich shop selling cholestorol burgers

Unbelievably they actually have a plan.... The red Line, The Green line, The Blue line and the Grey line. Construction is scheduled to start next week tongue.png

My girlfriend said she read an article about the subway plan in a Thai magazine that was published this month. She said a high ranking city manager was interviewed about the proposed plan. According to the article, the city manager stated the electrical lines have been laid and they are going to go forward with it. I think it is a great idea if it happens.

A tram line is possible for the grey line shown along Chang Klan. Road's wide enough. Probably most of the lines also, if you completely ban road side parking along the routes.

I know we have a mayor, but how many ranks of city managers do we have ????

Not really sure what electrical lines being laid has to do with a subway. If it is to be an electrical one would they not need the tunnels?

Or is the whole plan just put all the wiring underground

I think this is all about land price speculation.

I don't know how many city managers there are. The city is subdivided into four wards. There are 16 sub districts, which are further subdivided into 77 villages. They could have a dozen or more managers, lol.

...a subway in CM?? 555... and tonight the bar girls are 3 for the price one.... get real...

A feasibility study was done over 10 years ago and routes were laid out. This looks like the same plan getting an airing again.

Here is an article about it from 2006 that shows the proposed lines and stations.

In the 2006 plan the network would be underground in the inner city and then run above ground. Only the red and the blue lines would be built initially.

Tesco is giving away all their TVs if you believe in the subway system....looking at how they dug a small sewerage hole outside riverside on Sunday it will take them 555 years to build this subway

My understanding was that the Songtaew Mafia has been stifling any attempt to create a half decent public transport system in Chiang Mai for years and years. Thailand's second city and no mass transit. Embarrassing.

Incorrect. There is a bus service although like many things in life, it could be better. The important part of the message though is that there is no mafia, despite how much people like to use that word when describin things in Thailand!

I think they use the word so when they perceive them selves as being ripped off they can say the mafia ripped me off not this Thai guy beat me out of 10 baht on a songthow ride.cheesy.gifcheesy.gif
