tonika
Can anyone give me prices for 'Farang' type foods in Bangkok. Items, such as Corned Beef, Baked Beans, Tinned Soups, Tinned Tomato's, Tinned Salmon etc. I'm living in Issan, and I would like to compare prices with those in Bangkok, to see if they vary a lot. Because if so, it may be worth coming to Bangkok to buy in bulk. At present a tin of Corned Beef is just over B 300, where I shop in Issan ( that's over 6 UK Pounds ). When I left the UK in July, the price for the same item was just over 2 Pounds, in my local Supermarket. Although I do realize there is a cost for shipping, tax etc., I'm hoping these items are still a bit cheaper in Bangkok. If anyone can let me know, I'd be oblidged. ThailandBert
I always stock up on these type of things when I go to Penang. They are far cheaper there. Heinz baked beans are 30 Baht there and here 160 Baht. You can get corned beef here for around 110 Baht or cheaper. Soup, Cambells in Tesco is 50 odd and don't know about salmon as never buy it in a tin. I would say it would pay to go and stock up
whistleblower
Slightly cheaper in Bangkok. However there are places like Bunters, Ham and bacon (Hua Hin) and a recent discovery Barry's Pies and Pastries all stock home made Farang type foods, such as sausages, pies, tea bags, bacon, cheese, crumpets etc. I usually do a bulk shop every month at one of these places. I believe that Bunters regulary delivers up country. SantiSuk
Cant believe so many of us Brits still eat corned beef. I thought it went out of popularity along with tripe and jellied eels about 50 years ago!

ThailandBert
Knock your own crumpets up easily. Try this recipe. Quick and easy and after a couple of goes I can get them spot on every time now. Lovely with lashings of salty butter Link here http://britishfood.about.com/od/eorecipes/r/Recipe-Traditional-English-Crumpets.htm

lizardtongue
Would it be worth getting several people together and getting a bulk order sent from the UK, Australia or even USA. All you would need is to nominate one person who lives more or less central to the rest of the group have it sent to him and then the rest can collect at their convenience? Most of the items mentioned are almost non-perishable or have an extremely long shelf life, off the top of my head you would only need about 5/7 folks putting in 7k each that would probably equate to 6k worth of food and the other 1k going on shipping and tea money? Does anyone think this would be a 'goer' or am I living in a dream world? Hmmm ok the rush of blood has cleared from the ole cranium ................back to reality forget it Edited September 25, 2012 by lizardtongue
