September 30, 201213 yr My friend in Thailand is married and has a young daughter about three years old. I want to send a gift for her birthday. Does anyone have advice on what would be a good present for a young Thai girl? The mother said it would be okay to send money, but I am unsure as to what might be an appropriate amount. I would rather send a gift but I have heard horror stories about the Thai customs department ( I live in the U.S.)
September 30, 201213 yr Clothes are cheap as are poor quality toys, both are readily available. Take a look at Toys R Us to get an idea of what things cost then send the money unless you think it is better to ship something special from the USA but be warned lots of hassles with courier and customs. http://www.toysrus.co.th/inside/location.htm

I went to the website hoping to purchase a gift certificate online, but they can only be purchased in the store I wonder if there are other stores with a presence in Thailand that offer online gift certificates.
September 30, 201213 yr Send a toddler english beginner book, the touchy feelie ones with an inscription. lighter the better for postage reasons.Nice personal, productive present.
September 30, 201213 yr depending on what area they live in, socio economic etc... touchy feely books in english, clothes or whatever. it doesnt really matter cause its a gift, and difficult to find original gifts, and at that age, kids dont care. i nice doll, like a big soft doll, that can be dressed, or paints/colouring book, or make your own jewelry set for toddlers (plastic beads etc).... ive sent gifts to issaan villages and never had an issue with customes... gifts are cheap, and small and light weight. money wont go to the child anyhow. gift certificates have to belong to close by stores if they arent in a large city or have transportation, basically, gift certificates are a pain in the neck i feel. good for older people, but kids are much easier to get things for. a pocketbook/wallet/school supply matching set, back pack in shape of animal....... endless stuff. bina

October 5, 201213 yr Author Thanks for all your replies. Unfortunately, I could not find a suitable gift website that had both a online method of payment and a physical presence in Thailand. I ended up sending money via Paypal. Not my first choice but I have been told that Thais actually prefer money.
