Photo: Kritsada Mueanhawong PHUKET: -- Phuket’s new Provincial Police Commander, Maj Gen Chote Chawanwiwat, has vowed to make drugs and tourist safety his top priorities. Gen Chote was installed as Phuket’s top cop yesterday after arriving from Narathiwat in Thailand’s troubled Deep South, where he served as provincial police commander. His first order to the police chiefs of every police station on the island was to prepare for the upcoming tourism high season. “A new Tourist Safety and Information Center will be set up in Patong to assist tourists. This will be staffed by Provincial Police, Tourist Police, officers from the TAT [Tourism Authority of Thailand] and interpreters,” Gen Chote revealed. “This will be our first Tourist Safety and Information Center. Others will be set up across the island later,” he added. Included in his plans is the expansion of the Patong Safety Zone to the rest of the island. The general also called for more stringent checks at the Tah Chat Chai Police checkpoint at the north end of the island. “This is the only way on and off Phuket by road, which makes it the easiest place to catch drugs and illegal firearms being smuggled onto the island,” he said. Turing his attention to the “War Against Drugs”, Gen Chote ordered his superintendents to target dealers. “Phuket is a tourism destination. People should be coming here to enjoy nature and activities – not coming here for drugs,” Gen Chote said. He also told his police chiefs to clear out cold cases. “Get moving, make arrests and close cases. We should be solving as many cases as possible. I suggest you start with outstanding arrest warrants,” he advised. Among Phuket's most notable unsolved cases is the assassination in broad daylight of local newsman Wisut "Ae Inside" Tangwitthayaporn. noob7
Maybe he can convince the BiB's, to act in 'I have connections'-situations a bit more law abiding. Maybe he should start with the removal of all high rank officers to the deep south!

asiawatcher
If the directives are upheld - then it is a good start. To have issued the order to clean up the old crap - let's see how many of the 'cold' outstanding crimes are sorted.

sportsman69
[ quote ] " Among Phuket's most notable unsolved cases is the assassination in broad daylight of local newsman Wisut " Ae Inside" Tangwitthayaporn. " IIRC. They arrested the owner of KKP cable who was the president of the Phuket Chamber of Commerce or something like that for organizing the hit. Got bail I believe because a local Hi So or Gov official said he's an alright guy. 5555. The last I heard of it they were looking for someone else as an accomplice, hit man or driver . Not much space left under the rug to sweep all these unresolved cases but they probably fall off into a dumpster at the other end so status quo.
Dr Robert
Lets hope the air of confidence he exudes in his press photo translates to good management and good policing-Thailand can no longer tolerate the drugs and violence invading its tourist venues, so I wish him well. dude007
I'm afraid: the same old story! May I suggest this good looking police chief to clean his own Augeas stable first because there are the most stinking elements in the Thai police force. I know a few names but I am not entitled to tell them, but these are the real ulcers in the Phuket Police force: wrotten until the bottom... They are all real farang haters who are doing anything in their power to subdue the farangs rights in any case of dispute: from the most simple to the biggest! You can repeat this paragraph in respect to Pattaya. Most farang here know who they are (bent BIB) and how they take down vulnerable farang if the opportunity could be a potential earner. Maybe you need to do it anonymously, I'm not sure.
