BANGKOK, Oct 12 -- Thailand has proven its culinary prowess at the IKA World Culinary Olympics 2012 in Germany, winning four gold and one silver medals.

Chef Willment Leong, Thailand Culinary Academy founder and chairman, who led a group of Thai chefs to compete at the IKA World Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany October 5-10, told reporters upon the team’s return from Germany that the Thai chefs won four gold and one silver medal at the competition.

Chef Leong said there were more than 1,500 chefs representing more than 60 countries worldwide competing in the world’s most prestigious culinary competition, an even held every four years.

Thailand's team won medals for only the second time in 30 years, he said.

The Thai chiefs' winning entries which impressing judges with their edible culinary art were wedding cake, sugar show piece and dessert pastry.

The junior chefs team won a gold medal for hot cooking.

The junior national culinary teams won silver medal for cold display.

Mr Leong said that the team must seek financial support itself and while it received support from several companies, it was not enough to cover all expenses.

The Thailand Chefs Team coach urged the government to support youth in this field, in a way similar to the youth are supported in sport.

The IKA World Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, is billed as the oldest competition of its kind in the world with a tradition that dates back to 1900.

Similar to the Olympic Games, which brings together the best athletes from around the world, the IKA is the world’s single most elite competitive culinary event. (MCOT online news)

Currently it is impossible to trace the Thai facts mentioned in this article back to the "All 2012 results" webpages already mentioned in a previous post.

Before the Culinary Olympics 2012 in Erfurt started a special award was given to Paul Bocuse in Lyon:

Total banality of the highest order. When is the next one? I want to enter with my corned beef hash, a treat that only the lucky few can savour. My dear old Mum's bread pudding would have the judges in ecstacy.

BTW did any American Mom receive an award for her apple pie?

Any culinary event that rates highly any of these (below) countries for outstanding food is a joke, unless of course they were not making dishes from their own national cusine:

Sweden

Norway

Germany

Switzerland

Finland

If anyone replies trying to argue these countries have "some great dishes", that's on the same par as saying Thailand makes some great wine, or Scotland has tall mountains etc. Some of the above nations may have a dish or two worth eating but overall they eat slop.

Reading the debile, loating, ignorant comments here on a most positive event ( a rarerity it seems.....) regarding the country that they have choosen to live in, only confirms me to stay away from the 10th Anniversary of TV.bah.gif

Where was England with its spotted dick?

seriously though. I v. much doubt Thailands chefs at the event used MSG. Yet it's still used profusely in nearly every restaurant in Thailand. Certainly in the north, where Chinese owned restaurants rule. How about if champion Thai chefs champion the abandonment of using MSG in Thai restaurants? Naw, not going to happen. Asking Thai restaurants to not use MSG for a personal visit, is like asking them to turn down very loud sound systems. At best, they'll turn it down a little bit, and deem it sufficient.
