PATTAYA:--A 38 year old motorcyclist was killed on Friday afternoon after the victim and his motorbike were run-over by a coach, on its way to pick up Russian Tourists from the Pattaya Floating Market.

The accident occurred on the Sukhumvit Road, just 200 metres from the Market and resulted in the death of Khun Pairat, who was riding his bike the wrong way down the carriageway when he collided head on with the coach, which sustained serious front-end damage as the coach driver attempted evasive action to avoid the collision and slammed the empty coach into a concrete pylon at the side of the road.

The driver, Khun Tawin aged 39 who works for the OA Transport Company, was remarkably uninjured, despite the severity of the impact. He confirmed witness statements that the bike was travelling at a high rate of speed, against the flow of traffic

Not even news anymore, a regular and expected occurrence.

OK, the motorcyclist was riding on the wrong side of the road and is of course in the wrong, but I would not just rely on so-called "witness statements" offered by the driver. A bit strange, really.

I have had quite a few close encounters with the kamikaze drivers of OA Transport...they are frequently speeding, do not give way when they ought to (entering Sukhumvit Rd when the lights had turned red already for him), overtake dangerously (overtake into oncoming traffic on Naklua Road) just to name a few dangerous driving habits.

very much agree with you,

had a few encounters with these AO Kamikazees as well.....they should all be suspended....!!!....whenever I see one of those AO buses I stay well clear of them...

and btw....AO stands for Adventure Overseas.......isn't that funny ???

But it's also true that motorbikes often drive on the wrong side of the road. I'm surprised that more don't get killed. They would rather take a quick and dangerous route than a longer but safer route.

Even on expressways bikes ignore road rules and police don't do anything about is as they also do exactly the same thing. Stupid is as stupid does. Som num na (yet again). coffee1.gif

Bike, coach, car, van or truck the majority drive like lunatics! I wouldn't rely too much on the accident reconstruction team to ascertain if the coach drivers account is true or false.

Accident investigation/reconstruction in Thailand consists of a box of crayons and a dice.

It's not an accident it's negligence, we see it every day only some are luckier than others.

OA transport buses on the motorway should be especially regulated for speed.

Why should anyone be surprised. They allow them to build a major tourist attraction without any thought for bus parking and the result is that this section is one of the most dangerous in Chonburi. It will be maginified when they do the same stupid thing at the new water park on Sukumvit in Bang Sarey

Money rules and safety be damned in this country

I see these guys routinely doing 100km and more going down Suk. I use to have a motorhome that was about the same size as one of these buses. No way to stop in time for an emergency.

Speed control is desperately needed on Suk from Soi Wat Boon south....and that mess near the floating market has seen many accidents over the past few years. At least they've closed that U turn now.

P.S. the mini van drivers are worse, as are the local bus drivers. I just love (not) being passed on the shoulder at speed.

@'doggie888888': I totally agree with you; some of these OA-Transport drivers should be put against a wall and shot ! ! These buggers claim the far right-hand-side lane on the highways and simply refuse to budge, which angers many motorists in smaller (and often faster) vehicles, making for multiple cases of Road-Rage ! !

They may employ some decent chaps as drivers, but they are surely few and far between ! ! !

+1. Have to agree that at busy times the area around there is mental and am suprised that there are not more accidents.

  1. Give the police bikes, cars, even Mini vans, to use as mobile check points to enforce road traffic regulations.
  2. Train them to enforce traffic regulations
  3. Have a team of auditors to monitor traffic violations

The team of auditor say travel in an unarmed van with a video camera doing a set route, after completion of the route the scrutinies the video and list all types of offense committed and the number of times for each offense, then the local head of the police is given the report and one month to improve enforcement, after one month the audit team do another sweep of the same route under the same conditions, if the targets are not meet the heads should roll.

And so do the drivers of Pattaya Bus, Pegas, Hong Tong, NCA, 407, and all the others

+1. The Huay Yai police post, just a few hundred yards down the road, concentrate on stopping and fining foreign motorcyclists for not carrying a licence or passport, but they do nothing about the coaches which park sometimes two deep on a three lane highway just before the road narrows to two lanes. There is off-road parking behind the Floating Market, but the access road is usually blocked by visitors' cars.

Yes, they closed the U-turn at the floating market, but unfortunately, they forget to tell anyone about it. I almost got hit from a car that had passed me, then turned to make the U-turn, then seen that it was closed, then swerved back into the fast lane. Seems to be some kind of game the police like to play, close a road or U-turn one day, and next day it may be open.

yeah, the floating market area is a mad house, but its getting to be the same all around Pattaya, there are no parking areas for busses, so they just park anywhere, and also, most intersections are not made for buses, so they take up the whole road to turn.

Speaking of buses, those idiot bus drivers, that are hired by the military, that run up and down Sukhumvit, flashing their lights, and even with blue and red emergency lights flashing, not slowing for anything. What is the hurry? Doesnt matter if its raining or sunny, same speed, same style.
