Happy Birthday Sweetheart, Here's Your Rolex

Pretty bad choice for the gift as a face showing thing, there are so many copies running around here that nobody in their entourage will assume that the watch is not a copy.

Also, it's quite possible that the watch is just a copy, the girls would never know it. You can find very good copies nowadays. Cheap way to get them screaming and wetting their panties. Even better, it's possible the guy may have been scammed into buying a copy full price! That's what I would tell to myself :D

Actually no one in my wife's "entourage" would assume any of her Rolexes were fake. If this is something you're finding to be in the majority when taking your straw polls then you need a better class of peer group.

On my recent trip to Singapore I was asked to purchase and bring back a 60k handbag for her sister's friend. There was no question of not being paid back. Her entourage don't roll with fakes and bankroll their own shopping vices.

Personally I wept at paying 60k for a bag and would rather have a nice watch ;-)

Would well support my household of 9 ATM for a full two months, rent, utilities, food, transportation everything but entertainment (which I don't do these days)

How does the elephant camp make good money?

99% of them are profit-making tourist destinations with very low overhead costs.

Many set themselves up as "animal rescue" centers to scam the PETA crowd, and get these suckers to pay money to "volunteer", thinking they're doing good in the world.

This industry has the relevant regulatory agencies in their pocket, to the point that those very few that are truly run for the welfare of the elephants have been raided, shut down by the government in order I assume to stop making the business-oriented (read scamming IMO) ones look bad.

I think the most recent blow up was less than a year ago, bit of googling will find much controversy. . .

He's got the money. He wants to get something nice for his gal. Why not?

If I had the money I'd take my gf / gig shopping at Victoria Secrets and buy her whatever the hell I felt like buying her too (within reason).

Money : a good slave but a poor master.

Everyone appreciates nice presents, but when the reaction is so extreme as to scream and break into tears upon receipt of a watch, you really have to wonder what's gone wrong.

Blether is just pointing out that the Thai bloke is raising the bar in gift giving, making it harder for the more frugal to 'compete'.

Like some animals do as well? really

I fail to see just what this has to do with you ? jealous ?

I have just ordered the wife a new Toyota Yaris for passing her test. perhaps I should cancel it ?

You also remind me of a rather obnoxious Farang in a restaurant in Hua Hin.

A party of us had just celebrated the wedding of one of the party at a very nice sea food restaurant near the big standing Buddha. There was 8 of us in the party and we had had the most wonderful meal. We had been there drinking and eating for 6 hours. The staff had been amazing and we wanted for nothing. When the bill came I gave the girl a 1000 Baht tip to share amongst the many staff. This lit up her pretty little face and she ran off to tell the others. as she did this Farang on the next table launched into a tirade about who the F$#k did I think I was doing giving some stinking waitress a 1000 tip ? If people like you keep giving out tips like that then they are going to expect it from all of us living here.

he was politely told where to go as there were women present but what has what I give as a tip got to do with anyone else ? We had had excellent food and great service and taken up two tables for 6 hours. To me that was worth 20 quid, especially when the total bill was so low.

I also gave the waitress at the restaurant we eat at an I Phone 4 that a customer had left at the villa and didn't wan't returning as he had claimed on the insurance.

She is over the moon and I get the best service ever for a phone I didn't like and cost me nothing.

You give your lady as little as you want to and let other people give as much as they want to theirs.

Simple really !

So... give your Thai GF a cooker and see if it's the same as a Rolex!

I think she would drop it on my head.......she must be the only girl in Thailand that can't cook. sad.png

It was funny the other day though, sitting with her Mum and I mentioned I would need to get a Mia Noi that could cook, her mother just laughed and said " Good idea, or you must eat pad Thai all your life".

That apparently is the only dish she can put together. Oh well. biggrin.png

You'll need to make sure you don't put on weight now, or she'll be taking the whetstone to the scissors

Boy, have you got that right.

This. All the ladies went dancing around the place screaming with delight and the birthday girl burst into tears

If the OP has got his wits about him, he'll see that the Thai guy has done him a big favor. Talk about gold-digging and greed.

I hope the OP hasn't blown too much green on this crowd already.

I presume from your post you are here on the bones of you arse and seem jealous of those that don't have to worry about a few Baht here or a few thousand Baht there.

I can afford to give a 1000 Baht tip and you can't then I'm sorry.

For you not me !

Oh I suppose the Obama health care tax has hit you a bit so have to economise ?

I bought a Rolex in BKK a few years ago, looked great and ran good, for about six months. Then it quit running and everything rattled around inside it. 2,000 baht dosen't go as far as it use to.

2000baht for a "Bangkok benny" you were done up like a kipper !

Last year I watched as a German haggled with a night time watch seller at his table in a restaurant, it got as low as 600 baht & the German was insisting that the guy was kosher !

I was trying to keep my mouth shut & not to laugh out loud, so much so noodles were coming out of my nose & ears !!

Well Bertie, I'm first of all not an American so nthing to do with your hate against Obama.

I'm not gonna display my finances to you, but I can tell you that I ran a business in my homecountry before I retired at the age of 32, which is actually 21 years ago. So I don't think I will ever in my life have to worry about a few Baht.

I'm not sure if the same accounts for you, but from your posting history it is clear that you dream about money, and use the argument of other peoples money as often as possible in an attempt to belittle other posters.

My extended life experience tells me that people who do that, only dream about having money but actually don't have it.

Nice gesture but it didn't cost you nothing, it cost you 10,000thb, the price you would have gotten by selling it at the nearest mall.

I don't need the money and prefer the better service I now get and if as Jbrain hints at I have no money why would I give someone an I phone or 1000 Baht tip ?

Or am I lying ?

I also can say I gave a waitress an Iphone, who gonna proof if it is true or not on an anonymous forum.

From the other hand, from your comment it sounds a bit that you gave it a way and then claimed it to the insurance. I know, I know it was an unknown customer who left it in the villa and from which you knew he had claimed it.Maybe you could explain how you have so much details about an unknown customer.
