Hi i am thinking of booking my return ticket to thailand around the first week of December on Delta Air lines from Edmonton to seatle , japan then to bkk,

My questions are has any other person done this simullar trip from the USA to Bkk and your experience with Delta?

The dog is just a pup, weighing about 25 pounds and will have all the required vet papers to travel, to the USA from canada but not sure about japan landing there?

Any info would be greatful on this subject please, about options countries to travel through with a pup duriation of flight is it allowed .

Any feed back thanks

I'd book Air Canada to YVR then NRT-BKK (TG code share). Or simply book Edmonton to Vancouver where you then have a choice of carriers to Bangkok early morning to Vancouver so you can walk your dog and then check in. I'd avoid DL & all the hassles travelling to the US. Check with Kayak to get an idea of fares and options available.

Korean (Delta Miles) from YVR, I've heard they are very good with pets.

What breed is your dog ? some carriers do not allow snub nosed breeds.

Because you are travelling with a pet, book directly with the airline, don't book via an online travel agent as you'll need to verify with the airline before you book yourself and make sure a dog is permitted on that flight.

Edit

I forgot to mention, these guys are in BKK, they are awesome and will help with transportation when you arrive in BKK if needed & they understand the import rules. http://www.k9bangkok.com/

I'll be traveling with a pet in 2 weeks. Finalizing the process now. We're flying United and so far they've been great to work with. We booked direct, and spoke with their "pet" department. We have bought a spot for the dog also. I think it cost $125 or something like that. There's a limited number per plane that are allowed onboard. And as mentioned above, book direct with the airlines. It'll make everything much easier. We're flying Vegas-SFO-Tokyo-BKK. Loooooong flight.

I have a yorkie. So only 8lbs. We're carrying it onboard with us. The pet department said this was best, especially considering the customs department there in Thailand. I've heard horror stories of what amounts they want to extract...err....charge for bringing animals in. This way, from what I've read, is quite simple.

Take a look at the thread below. Lots of info there including the website for the Thai department responsible for this and their requirements. They need to followed very closely.

I'd stick with a single airline which operates their own metal all the way through to BKK - obviously DL and UA fits the bill (not sure about YEG-SEA?).

Avoid code-shares, flights with a UA or DL flight number but operated by another airline.

UA has had some public issues recently: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/49122435/ns/today-today_pets_and_animals/t/distraught-model-blames-airline-dogs-death/

Good to know that United will also allow allow dogs in the cabin. That's the best way to do it.

afaik, with most airlines, the dog carrier must fit under the seat in front of you. I doubt that will work with the OP's 25 lb pup. My only experience is with Korean Airlines and that was in the opposite direction. Not my dog, but my niece's 1.5 lb Yorkie puppy. She had a carrier for under the seat but the puppy spend most of the flight in her pocket.

just remember once your pet is in Thailand,it can never leave, due to your pet being exposeded to all kinds of stuff.

or they will be in lock-up for 30-60 days to make sure they didn't bring any thing back with them. you have to pay for the care big $$$$

We took our dog last year onboard with us from the u.s. to Bangkok on Delta and had no problems. We had the required papers from the vet but because we no longer vaccinate our pets the federal vet would not give us his approval so when arriving in Bkk we paid a fine which I prefered and went on our way.

That's not true at all. Neither statement. I don't know what Canadian regulations are (where the OP is from), but bringing a dog back to the US from Thailand, and most countries is simple. I've also found vet care in Thailand to be competent and incredibly inexpensive.

Correct it is not true at all, I`ve also had a family member take a Lhasa from Thailand to Canada and NO issues at all.

There are some breeds that are banned from the US Canada as seen here but other than that no problem.

46 kilo (check weight limits, dog+cage, for your airline) black lab brought from LAX - BKK two years ago. no problems, no gouging at BKK animal inspection dept, just the nominal fee and five minutes.

DO make sure your animal has ALL required docs and IS very healthy. Its an arduous journey if they're in the cargo hold. Some dogs don't make it... very sad. Layovers are risky in extreme weather/seasons, so pay attention to this and fly nonstop if there's a risk of extreme temperatures anywhere along the way. Get a water dispenser for the cage, feed & walk the dog before the hand-off for boarding.
