I have bought the land.

I found a structural engineer and had him produce the drawings based on my own design, (very professional work).

I have a good builder, (have checked his work, one house built, one half built and one just started), his work is more than acceptable. His structural work is up to standard and his finishes are excellent.

His price is also very fair and reasonable.

So far so good.

The problem:

I am working in Jakarta, (yeah, I know, just lucky I guess), and cannot oversee the work.

I know for a fact, no matter how much confidence you have in your contractor, you really need to check things for yourself. This goes for every country not just Thailand.

I need someone knowledgeable and trustworthy, (don’t laugh), who can oversee the work for me. Do you know anyone who can help?

I will come to a fair arrangement with the right person, (Thai or Farang).

I would ask the structural engineer who drew up the plans but he is a mate of the builder so I would like someone independent.

I would ask some of the Thai engineers I worked with in Bangkok before but Phimai is just a bit too far from the Big Mango for them to keep going up there and besides the have their own work to do.

I would like to start construction sometime between now and the end of April and would like to complete before the end of the year, (2006 that is!).

The Project:

Two houses, one 200 sqm and the other 500sqm.

The location is a small village called Ban Saeng, (spelling), which is about 8 kilometers outside of Phimai.

I know from Thai Visa that there are a few Farang living in that area or within striking distance so if you want something interesting to do, (and get paid for it, not a lot), then contact me won’t you? Or if you know a good Thai bloke let me know.

Hope you can help.

WOW!

Your 500 sqm home will have room for not only a pool table but also a bowling alley.

I PM you a website and an email address that may be able to help.

It’s been 7 months since I posted the opening post.

(Thanks to the two guys who replied).

Well I found a good builder all by myself.

He turned out to be excellent. (I have been in the construction industry for 30+ years so I know something about building and services).

I would recommend this crew to anyone.

I taught the wife and her brother to check the rebar size delivered and the brand of cement used etc etc, and the wife’s uncle, who lives in the village, but who is retired now, and who spent his working life on Bangkok building sites as a general foreman comes by every day to check on things.

I get up there from Jakarta as often as I can, (the boss is getting suspicious now about the frequent business trips out of the country but I think I can handle him), and each time I go I can find no fault with the structure or the workmanship.

The schedule is long, about 10.5 months in all, but is a big Baan and the progress payments suit me just fine. It also means I have time to check things out for myself.

The house is about 50% complete now and so far so good.

I only post this because I’ve been reading a few posts lately on this forum and others about shitty Thai builders that are giving people severe grief.

I just wanted to let you know that there are good Thai builders out there.

The only downside in all of this is that the wife thinks she’s a Project Manager now, (pity, she used to be such a sweet thing too).

Cheers.
